We need to change tipping culture

I don't eat out much, but I generally tip. I won't tip a Debbie Downer who is slow, nasty, and rude.

I always give the tip in cash. I track down the waitress and hand her some bills. I tell her to forget the IRS and laugh.

I tip everyone the same way, whether restaurant servers or tradespeople -- the delivery people and installers who work for them. Also, the mail carriers and the UPS guy -- we're so lucky to have the same guy all the time.

You tip them all the same amount?

How bout we do this?
No tips above 10 percent. A tip is just a nice addition to the meal to acknowledge a pleasant server or service above and beyond normal. Tip based on the performance of the server, not the price of the meal.
Server does not work harder to deliver a prime steak or a burger and fries

But tipping culture is out of hand. Tips start at 20 percent and it is the customer responsible for the livelihood of the server. Leaving a bad tip is taking food out of the mouths of their family. I am already paying for the food, restaurant rent, advertising, insurance, taxes…….why am I expected to pay the salary of someone who works for YOU?
Cheapskate

He just watched videos of stores. He's never been there! I have. European stores have nothing on our worst stores!

Have you ever been to an American grocery store?

Often. Wegman’s is the best. And l shall be there again soon. Publix was okay, but too expensive. Harris Teeter too. Thank goodness for Aldi and Lidl. Oh and

I live in Europe, so l know what that guy was talking about. Love the French supermarkets. The Belgian ones are particularly good.Oh and Trader Joe’s, which is owned by Aldi. I can get English crumpets in there.

Went to Waffle House this morning and there was a sign at the register saying they add an automatic surcharge of 20 percent on takeout orders

Depending on jurisdiction ... tips are collect by the manager, taxed, and then distributed to the employees to bring their wages up to minimum wage ... that's right, the owners keep the money and use the tips to bring the paycheck to minimum ...

You're tipping the owners, not the servers ... sometimes it's worth it ... sometimes not ...

I'm late to the conversation, but will still add something.

I don't like that the tip percentage went to 15% to 20%. Percentage covers inflation.

Another thing is automatically adding a tip to the bill. The whole idea of a tip is appreciation for good service. You can create some real resentment by making such things automatic.

I'm a good tipper also but I never thought about tipping mail carriers or UPS. hmmmm maybe I will!

We're lucky to have the same UPS driver, year after year, who stops and loves up on my dog and brings her the right treats. With the exception of the last 6 months or so, our regular mail carriers have been neighbors who are the same way -- friendly small town people who genuinely care about their customers! One of the local mail carriers goes to my church.

Small town goodness deserves a gift at Christmas.

I went to Waffle House yesterday and they had a sign at the register that they were adding 20 percent to all take out orders as a service charge.

Used to be you threw a Buck in the jar for takeout.
Now they demand 20 percent

Their choice. Do you think all the leak-proof containers, bags, napkins, utensils etc. are free? Cost them money, hassle to order, ship, store and handout to you early aged do-nothing brainless retiree GOVT stooges. Keeping your crap hot while you show up late demanding, try that in Asia you filthy Dirty American pig.
