We need to change tipping culture

And you can enjoy being ā€œwaited onā€ by someone that’s making the same pay rate not dependent on your experience you dumb ****
Tips are not the only reason for decent service. Plenty of places have good service without tips. Tips also don't guarantee good service.

I've been to countries where tipping isn't the standard and it didn't ruin the experience. Your insults seem like more of a projection.

No projection, you go enjoy your meals where you don’t tip your servers, I’m sure it’ll work out for you quite well

I had a side gig at Red Lobster in Florida. The pay was $2.20 an hour. (1998) I'd work 8 hours and make $16 bucks which the government took all of it and my check was basically zero. I did have the tips, which OP needs to understand if you go in this industry the wages are not good and the servers depend on the tips. I say tip accordingly. If the cook screwed up, don't make the server suffer for it.

Yes, I had a full good paying job I did (Bakery Manager) I would leave that job to go the RL and make peanuts.

However in Vegas the servers made like $12 an hour and made excellent tips.

Then enjoy your fast food service dumbass

Why can’t they just pay a decent wage, raise the prices of their meals accordingly, and relieve us of having to do a lot of higher math after a lavish meal?
Tax should be included in the single price as well.

I agree about the decent wages, but raising the price is where your train jumps the track in my opinion when food is already getting so expensive.

God bless you always!!!

Yeah. Those servers are expected to eat air.

And you can enjoy your fast food service for a waiter with a guaranteed wage. You don’t think things through much do you you cheap ****
You don't have any experience of other cultures, do you?

The two biggest tips I know of was a Manhattan waitress been given a lottery ticket as a tip, it won $6 million, so she halved it with the guy that gave it to her. And in 1922, Einstein didn't have any cash on him in Tokyo to give as a tip, so he scribbled out a note and said it'll be worth something one day. It sold in 2017 for $1.56 million.
I am not surprised that Einstein's note turned out to be worth millions, but I am surprised that the clerk kept the note for all these years.

You'll pay the 15-20% more for the meal then.
Which is fine.

If I think the price of food is reasonable, I will eat. If not, I won't.

Who has "shamed" you? Servers?
Sometimes. But also people like you here in this thread.

The disconnect you have is that you think the customer wouldn't be supporting the staff if they weren't tipping. Where do you think the money to pay the staff comes from? Restaurants operate on very small profit margins, so if you do away with tipping the only way the restaurant will be able to support same salaries the wait staff is currently making is to raise prices in order to make up the difference, so you're going to pay for it either way. At least with tipping, you can leave a bad tip or none at all for garbage service.
If they have to raise prices, that's fine by me. If their food is good enough, the restaurant should be able to survive despite the upped prices. If it's not good enough, it will go out of business. I don't understand why this is supposed to be a bad thing.

How often have you traveled to Europe? I go there all the time. Tipping isn't much of a thing there and when you do the standard tip is considerably less than here. The service you get there is also considerably less. You won't have the server stopping by your table every few minutes to see if you need anything. They'll take your order when you sit down, deliver you food, and that's it. If you need something more or you want your check you have to flag them down.
This is actually preferrable. I hate it when they come once every 3 seconds to ask me how I am doing. I have to chew harder and faster, swallow all that food, so that I can clear my mouth and give a response. Some of them even lower themselves to the table level and tilt their head slightly. UGH.

And if it happens to be on the server's break, be prepared to wait for them to return because nobody else will do it for you.

Then sounds like it's the manager's fault. She should have scheduled someone to cover the waiter who had just gone on her break.

Yes. I hate it.

Tipping has its advantages, but as typical, you guys can only see it through the lens of a "greedy restaurant owner" not wanting to pay their employees.
The leverage you can use over an exploited employee to make up their income is an advantage?

Ok. I guess that is the case in a feeding frenzy society.

As I understand it, tipping came from guilty passengers on Pullmans, whose Black staff was paid a pittance after the civil war.

Okay, Is that it? Just pay them better?

Who is exactly is paying them?
Wages -

The farmer grows and harvests the food. receives a wage

The truck driver transports the food. Receives s wage.

The chef prepares the food. Receives a wage.

The waiter/waitress.............

:dunno:

Who demands tips?... if you fall into a restaurant with 6 of your friends it is perfectly understandable you could be charged a certain percentage above the food price...
You are not just buying food you are also buying service... if you neglect to tip without a good reason you are not a good person... and restaurant owners would rather you eat at home...
True. And some of the worst tippers are the biggest pain in the ass customers making multiple requests or sending back food not prepared to their liking.

Can't even manage a $5 tip if you are posting it on twitter? Geez.

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (Iowa) is defending herself amid social media backlash, as the Republican lawmaker left what some users are calling a ā€œridiculousā€ tip at a restaurant — in an attempt to celebrate the GOP’s ā€œno tax on tipsā€ deduction passed earlier this year.

ā€œMade a pit stop in Iowa County for lunch at Sun Down Bar and Grill,ā€ Miller-Meeks wrote Monday on X, formerly Twitter. ā€œI got to celebrate No Tax on Tips with our wonderful server, she’s thrilled about this provision and excited to keep more of what she earns!ā€

An accompanying image of her receipt showed Miller-Meeks had a $7 order of corn nuggets and a $10 Philly cheesesteak sandwich, which came to a total of $18.19, after adding local sales tax. The photo showed Miller-Meeks left $21 and small change on her table.

The pictured receipt notably confirmed that a 20% tip on the total bill would amount to $3.40.

ā€œYou’d think the server would at least get $5 since you’re using her as a political prop on a cash tip she wouldn’t have reported,ā€ one user replied on X, with another person commenting: ā€œI’ve never seen someone brag so hard about being such a cheap asshole.ā€

I don't exactly agree with this title, but this does provide some guideline and thoughts for consideration.
