We need to change tipping culture

By changing culture I assume you mean not have government intervention.

I was a server in my first job. People were often cheap, but some could be very generous. I think some of it was skewed because a lot of people did not know who to figure in their head, and they did not want to bother checking on their phone.

My Mother's best friend was a waitress and I also dated a waitress back in the day. I learned from them how hard waitresses work for their money. I always tipped over 15 percent even before that was expected.

Tipping needs to be abolished.

It's not the customers responsiblity to pay the employees of a place, because the business can't be bothered to pay them a real wage to live off of.

A tip is supposed to be a Thank You gesture from the customer to the person who waited on them or helped them. It is NOT a supplimation of income!!

Huh? Ten percent is brain dead easy? Then about half of that is 5%. Good lord Americans are becoming stupid as black OXYEN 🐂

Basically a almost all Black version of Dennys or IHOP. Not all bad. But a little bit weird food? I went once. I could tell some stories. I might go back if hungry.
Back in my misspent youth my roommate and I would stop off at Waffle House after closing down the bars. Quite the group of folks in a Waffle House at 2am. LOL

I've been tipping onto Tax forever also. Never really thought to exclude it? O well. That's that.

There is always the discussion about who to tip. My mom tips just about everyone, but I can't see it. I am not tipping the tv guy or the plumber. Stylists should be tipped, at least for me. Servers don't make wages of more hearty professions, so yes, I will tip good service.

I think anyone who is working for another, like appliance repairmen, delivery drivers, et cetera, does not get paid enough, so they get a tip. Especially with workers I'm going to see over and over, like for regular maintenance, it makes for friendly relationships.

The entire American restaurant industry operates according to certain paradigms, including the compensation of servers. They are paid a pittance - the legal minimum wage for them is $2.13/hr - and the menu prices are set according to this custom.

If you (cheap bastard) say that "They should pay their servers a living wage," you would be the first one screeching about how high the menu prices are - and they would be breathtaking. So it is OBVIOUS that if a few select restaurants decided to change the paradigm, they would be out of business before the second dinner serving after the change.

At the present time, a tip of 15% is the norm for acceptable service, more for exceptional service and a little less if the service is poor. It was 20% during Covid, but those days are gone now.

Keep in mind that when State legislators start talking about changing the System, increasing the MW for servers and killing tipping, THE SERVERS are the ones who complain the loudest, because they make way more than $7.25/hr, which is what they would default to.

As for others (barista's, counter workers, hotel maids, Amtrak porters, etc.) no tip is "required" but exceptional service should be recognized in some way. Tradesmen who come to the house make plenty; they don't need no tip.
