Virginia Supreme Court strikes down Democrats’ redistricting plan, dimming party’s midterm hopes

This is a disaster for the Dems. What a great way to start the weekend.

Well there it is. Looks like Spamburger will be crying in her soup today.

The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday blocked a new Democratic-drawn congressional map from taking effect, delivering a major boost for Republicans as they defend their narrow House majority in the midterm elections.

Excellent news. A rare win for democracy. Virginia currently has one of the fairest maps in the country.

The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday struck down a voter-approved Democratic congressional redistricting plan, delivering another major setback to the party in a nationwide battle against Republicans for an edge in this year’s midterm elections.

The court ruled 4-3 that the state’s Democratic-led legislature violated procedural requirements when it placed the constitutional amendment on the ballot to authorize the mid-decade redistricting. Voters narrowly approved the amendment April 21, but the court’s ruling renders the results of that vote meaningless.

Writing for the majority, Justice D. Arthur Kelsey wrote that the legislature submitted the proposed constitutional amendment to voters “in an unprecedented manner.”

“This violation irreparably undermines the integrity of the resulting referendum vote and renders it null and void,” he wrote.

Great news for Virginians and the country!

I figured it was in grave trouble when the VASC allowed the Tazwell judge's stay of cert stand.

In before "Mah will of the voters"....Suck it dems. :laughing0301:

As I previously posted numerous times, we no longer have a Supreme Court, we have the legal defense arm of the Republican Party.

Enjoy it while you can fascists.

This is shameful. Republicans are doing everything they can to stop what might be a total removal of Republicans from both houses. So it looks like it will be up to the voters.

You do understand that this was the decision of a STATE supreme court. They recognized that the election that narrowly (less than 2% of the vote, was a lie from the get go. They called it unprecedented. Same thing.

Dupe

You can spill your crocodile tears in the James River, whiny fascist.

Bet you thought it was the president didn't you.
Virginia Supreme Court justices are primarily elected by the General Assembly, with governors filling interim vacancies.

Appointment

Virginia Supreme Court justices are elected by a majority vote of both houses of the General Assembly for twelve-year terms. If a vacancy occurs while the legislature is not in session, the Governor may appoint a justice to serve until thirty days after the next legislative session begins. Historically, the court has also seen appointments under special circumstances, such as during Reconstruction when military authorities temporarily appointed judges.

Summary

In Virginia, the General Assembly is the primary appointing authority for Supreme Court justices, with the Governor filling interim vacancies. Historical exceptions include military appointments during Reconstruction and early ex officio service from other courts. Notable examples include Cleo Powell (nominated by Governor McDonnell) and Bernard Goodwyn (appointed by Governor Kaine before legislative confirmation),.

That's what the vile dems get for overstepping and trying to use the transplant advantage to try to control the whole state.

I wonder if the VASC's decision also puts the old redistricting law back into effect?

Sounds like great news for you and America.

Toss in the SCOTUS decision and it's really is "game over" for the dems as far as redistricting goes.

For more than a decade, Democrats and their allies have used the federal courts as a redistricting weapon to force Republican-led states to carve up congressional maps along racial lines, override the will of state legislatures, and hand Democrats seats they couldn't win on merit.
