USMB Coffee Shop IV

For all those with joys we rejoice, and we pray or send positive vibes and keep vigil for:

Harper, the inspiration for the vigil list. More surgeries ahead.
Ringel05 for continued wellness and his brothers' families for relief from adversity and illness.
Hombre & Foxfyre's son Mike for continued wellness
Beautress for health and wellness.
SFC Ollie for healing and wellness
Gracie for solutions and peace.
Mrs. Saveliberty for healing.
Oddball's mom for continued good health and healing.
Ringel05's brother Dutch for continued healing.
And all our insomniacs having trouble getting a good night's sleep.

And we keep the light on so those who have moved on to other places can find their way back. And we hope they do.

For our skywatchers, a massive solar flare a few days ago will likely result in auroras being visible to a lot of the northern USA and southern Canada that normally don't see these:

Just finished making a large batch of homemade chicken noodle soup. It will either make twelve 1 cup servings or two 2 cup servings (obviously.....).
Might make some potato and onion soup in the next few days. I always make large batches of different meals and freeze the individual servings. Quite convenient, just thaw and nuke........

I ought to do that. Just haven't found the discipline though.

I'm listening to some old Beach Boy tunes and remembering my brother taking me to the beach (Huntington Beach .. CA) and telling me to get lost while he romanced the gals.. sheesh..😄

Well little brothers can be rather offputting when it comes to romancing the gals. LOL

But always a joy when you check in Lumpy, my friend. I doubt you're any more boring than the rest of us though. :)

I had stopped using my bread machine a while back as no recipe seemed to come out all that well. Today I decided to use it as a mixer/kneader and first rise machine. Took it out, kneaded the dough about 8 times, forming it into a log and putting it in the (large) loaf pan. It was a 1.5 pound recipe. Let rise for 45 minutes, brush the top with butter and on the middle rack for 45 minutes. I also put a metal pan with about a quarter inch of water in it on the lowest rack, read that it helps. Sure enough it produced a wonderfully done, great tasting, soft loaf. That was a plain white bread recipe so I'll try my favorite oatbread recipe next.

Okay, that was fun....... I cut a couple of slices bread and popped them in the toaster. Went to the bathroom then got distracted. Suddenly I smell burning toast, leave the room and there is smoke halfway down from the ceiling. Then the smoke detector went off of course. The auto popup feature did not work so another old appliance to be replaced, at least this one is cheap.
I had to start every fan and open every door and window and it's still venting the remnants. It literally turned the bread slices into charcoal briquettes.

I can relate and very annoying. But at least you didn't set your kitchen on fire. During his insurance adjusting days, Hombre worked a couple of fire losses started by pop tarts in the toaster.

I love to make bread. Love the hand kneading process--I can take out a lot of my frustrations doing that LOL--but I've found over kneading can be as harmful to the quality of your bread as not kneading enough. Find balance there to be had which is why I think the bread machines sometimes don't make the best bread.

I haven't made bread in awhile. You've inspired me though so I think I'll give it a try again.

Just over a month ago I finally replaced my 15+ year old 1000 watt microwave. It started tripping the GFI (Ground Fault Indicator outlet) it was plugged into....... I replaced the GFI also as the old microwave had melted the positive contact. House electrical fire averted............. 👍
I think the toaster was older. Both make the argument for upgrading plugin kitchen appliances probably once a decade.

True. Most of us wait for them to quit before replacing them. But as you observed, that might not be the wisest policy.

We don't use the toaster a lot as we like to toast the bread in the toaster oven so that it can toast the butter into the bread as it toasts. So the toaster is still like new. The toaster oven and microwave both get frequent workouts though and we should probably look into replacing both.
