U.S. Retail Sales Unexpectedly Fall the Most in Nine Years

Who even cares? Thanks to the "Trump/Russia" thing going "poof", the left is desperately throwing up against wall whatever garbage they can fish out of the dumpster.

Still voting for him in 2020.:dance::mm::5_1_12024:

Good for you. Nobody voted for Trump in 2018 and 2020 isn't looking good either.

The American middle class is PISSED about the their tax cuts. One woman posted that she got back 1/3 of the amount she got back last year on the same amount of income. Her withholding went down by $90 per month, overall, her tax bill went up by $900. Even the IRS has said the average refund is DOWN and more Americans are paying than in history.

This issue was the linchpin of Trump's selling of the tax cuts. If Americans weren't convinced that Trump was lying about the tax cuts BEFORE, they sure are now.

That's aside from the government shutdown, a wall no one wants, being publically embarassed by Nancy Pelosi, and his performance at Helsinki, which makes every American from either party cringe with embarassment, NATO, his failure to contain Kim's nuclear arsenal, and the daily chaos, bribery and corruption of the Trump White House.

Excuse me? You don't speak for the "middle class." Otherwise your candidate would have won the election. But she didn't.

And if some woman posted that she got back 1/3 of the amount she got back last year on the same amount of income, I would suggest that you tell her to work harder, increase her withholding, and quit freeloading big income tax refunds that she didn't pay in.

'U.S. retail sales unexpectedly fell in December, posting the worst drop in nine years in a sign of slower economic momentum at year-end amid financial market turmoil and the government shutdown.

The value of overall sales fell 1.2 percent from the prior month after a downwardly revised 0.1 percent increase in November, according to Commerce Department figures released Thursday after a four-week delay due to the shutdown. That missed all economist estimates in a Bloomberg survey that had called for a 0.1 percent gain.'

Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

The usually, VERY accurate GDPNow just slashed it's Q4 GDP growth from 2.7% all the way down to 1.5%.

GDPNow - Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta

If the above holds...that would mean GDP growth for 2018 would have been a tepid 2.8%.

So much for Trump's booming economy.
Yikes.

That the market corrected and people rushed to pay off their lines of credit instead of spending, is just as plausible an explanation.

Not everything the markets do has a political explanation.
Right, because consumers have always historically chosen to pay off their debt in Christmas season.

LoL

She DID pay it in. Trump told her she'd get a bigger refund than last year because of the cuts. She got LESS. Her taxes WENT UP! Combining this year's refund with the savings in her withholding, she received nearly 1/3 third less than her refund last year.

What part of this are you partisan hacks not getting? Trump's tax cuts for the middle class were a LIE. The middle class are PAYING for the tax cuts to the wealthy. Starting NOW.

Not my problem. I plan on taking advantage of every tax break my accountant can find.

You don't speak for every Murican, princess.

I don't speak for anyone but myself, but I'm quite capable of noting 13,500 angry responses to reports that tax refunds are disappointing expectations. I can also read news reports that the IRS is reporting refunds are down across the board.

And I remember people about a year ago complaining their pay packets hadn't gone up much with the tax cuts, and Trump told them then they would get a big refund next year when they filed.

Then there's the results of the mid-term elections. I am capable of connecting dots, sniffing the wind to see which ways it's blowing, and gauging the anger on this board. The only people defending Donald Trump these days are bripat and the Russian trolls.

You didn't, and neither did I.
OK....So the market takes a tumble and investors with big margins decide to pay them down, instead of going and spending money on shit.

That clear enough for your double-digit IQ?
Nice, you make an error, and insult me.

We're done here dipshit.

It is far more likely that they are depressed because the shutdown. The feds hire a LOT of people and most would have been preparing for a lengthy time without a paycheck.

how can that be! tax cut economics is supposed to help the Richest get richer so they can "bail out the rest of us".

The government of both parties and the Federal reserve have been meddling in the economy for decades.

Ron Paul told you all that sooner rather than later, it would not matter which party was in control of the levers of power, shit would hit the fan.

Growth can not happen when there are deficits. When both parties have spending priorities, and there is no fiscal restraint anywhere, all of these pieces of shit are to blame.

GOVERNMENT IS AT FAULT, ALL OF THEM! THE CORPORATE SOCIALIST LYING MEDIA AS WELL.

Stop arguing and pointing fingers, all of these idiots and the corrupt system is the problem.

Nothing was solved in '08, and it is still rotten to the core.

*****WHY DEFICITS STOPPED MATTERING*****
*****WHY DEFICITS STOPPED MATTERING***** | Market Skeptics

"What is the "cost" of federal deficits? The question is important because, since 1980s, the US government and the media have been claiming that "deficits don't matter". There are no negative consequences to massive federal overspending (such as the 2010 $1.29 trillion budget deficit). We can spend our way to prosperity.

However, common sense tells us that government deficits must have a cost. If that were not the case, we could eliminate all taxes, and run the entire government on money printing and borrowing.

WHEN DEFICITS STILL MATTERED

Prior to 1980, the world was simple and it made sense. When the government ran deficits, the Federal Reserve then would print money to pay for them. This money printing would cause inflation, and inflation would push up interest rates. The whole process was captured in the simple equation below.

Deficits = Money Printing = INFLATION = HIGHER INTEREST RATES

In the graph below, you can clearly see the link between deficits and money printing. Notice how every time the US runs a deficit (blue line) the money supply grows (yellow line). . . . . con't"

Far more likely than that everyone suddenly decided to say down their credit cards and shit.

Lost sales is not "Trump's" economy. It is the Democrats' economy which supports $138 Billion/year SALES LOSS, by way of immigrant remittances, which they cause by resisting the border wall construction, other handicaps to border security, birthright citizenship, amnesty for illegal aliens, and sanctuary cities.

If Democrats are concerned about US retail sales, they ought to be down on the border building the wall, without pay, working as unpaid volunteers, and notifying ICE of every illegal alien they know of.
