First, we already have a large base on the northwest coast of Greenland: Pituffik Space Base. The base covers about 570,000 acres, and only around 10% of that is currently being used. Recently, facilities have been moved closer together to make operations more efficient.

If the U.S. wanted to expand the base, that shouldn’t be a problem. There’s basically nothing out there but polar bears for over 75 miles. There are no fences around the base, so there’s nothing to move. All Trump would need to do is announce that he’s just “stolen” a million acres or so from Greenland. But why would he want to do that, other than to piss off most of Europe?

There are several newly developed shipping lanes near the north end of Greenland, which Pituffik probably monitors. That said, the heavy traffic lanes are about 1,000 to 2,000 miles from Greenland’s northern coast. It seems like those lanes could be monitored more effectively by satellites and subs than by ground-based radars and fly overs. Also, keep in mind that the nearest point to Russia is over 3,000 miles from Greenland.

We will pay the lions share in blood and treasure if there is a conflict over Greenland. The Danes will offer a mere fraction of what is required to defend it. Why shouldn't we own it? It isn't a temporary measure, it's a permanent situation. It should have been done right after WWII.
