I'm not a Tom Cruze fan and I think the plot is mildly ludicrous and the bit about the Cougar pilot freaking out in a potential combat incidence is mildly insulting to the Navy but the opening sequence that features obvious real life aboard an Aircraft Carrier is the best that Hollywood can do,

And what’s your review of Top Gun 2

You are reviewing a movie from 1986 nearly 40 years later?

When they movie came out, I was a LTjg in the Navy.

My guess is that people looking to be naval aviators increased following the release of the movie.

A Tarantino classic:

From Sleep with Me (1994)

Cruise is one of my least favorite actors. Mainly because he has wasted his talent on 20 movies that stroke his ego. They are all the same movie, just different ways.
Enter hot shot, smart aleck super talent [enter some cool career like a jet pilot, race car driver, spy etc.]
Enter hot girl no one can get, who can't stop herself from falling all over herself for Tom Cruise.
Cruise's character, either due to him showing off his super talent, or can't get along with an asshole superior that hates him - decides to walk away from said super cool job.
Make up some disaster that only super cool cracker jack Tom Cruise can solve because he is just that awesome!! He arrives at the last second - saves the day and gets the girl.

John Wayne always played John Wayne
Stallone always played Stallone
Cary Grant always played Cary Grant

Maybe not great actors but entertaining
Same as Tom Cruise

If you haven't already, check out Edge of Tomorrow (2014). It's one of the few Cruise movies I like, and it's highly re-watchable. Cruise plays a guy who is very bad at what he does. Unfortunately, it looks as if they're planning on ruining it with a sequel...

It's based on the manga and novel "All You Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. I've never read it, the closest I come to manga is my youngest kid.

I was just a young kid when it came out and when I saw those F-14s, I was a dumb ass and automatically thought Air Force instead of Navy.

So my interests ultimately went in the direction of the former rather than the latter. :dunno:

When you're younger, movies are great. The error some make, they can't separate the fiction from reality.

I DID like him in Minority Report, Born On The Fourth Of July and Rain Man.

Cruise as book fiction hero Jack Reacher was never credible if you ever read the book.

Totally agree with this recommendation.

Also enjoyed

The Jack Reacher movies were interesting, but not great.

I've seen an officer completely freak out during a combat situation. He was the least unprofessional person I ever knew.

Not true. The Cougar episode was a cheap hollywood trick to make Maverick look like a reluctant 2nd choice but it was insulting to all Navy real life flyers,

How would it be insulting to real life flyers? It certainly wasn’t a reflection of them personally
