From the barrel to the pump: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on prices for petroleum products

This article details price movements for petroleum products in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The pandemic affected energy prices for products ranging from crude oil to various refined petroleum products, such as heating oil, jet fuel, diesel fuel, retail gasoline, and gasoline at the pump. The onset of the pandemic led to an initial drop in prices for petroleum-based products, and then, just as abruptly, prices rose sharply as producers limited production and demand increased.

In February, cases were reported throughout Europe and the United States, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a global emergency. On March 3, the United States followed suit by declaring a national emergency, a move that resulted in lockdowns across the country.

As economic activity slowed sharply across the globe, demand for petroleum and petroleum products plummeted. The drop in demand, coupled with an unexpected increase in supply, led to a collapse in crude oil prices and subsequent impacts on prices for refined petroleum products and other downstream items, notably gasoline. As economies reopened, the initial price downturn gave way to reduced oil production and some renewed demand. As a result, prices for oil products partially recovered.

In early 2020, BLS price indexes for petroleum products reflected the dramatic shift in economic activity caused by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shocks to demand and then supply pushed prices for petroleum products downward. From the time of the Childrens Bureau until 1965 no one talked about how the welfare state was wrong and subsisided the disintegration of the white family. These sky high rates of poverty occurred during the time these fools rant about the black 2 parent family. I've got a guy in my company who was born on the really shitty side of Detroit. He has no idea who is father is. When he came to us at age 19 he didn't even have a high school diploma, but he did have a rather impressive juvenile rap sheet. He had a bit of an attitude, but we took a chance and hired him in for general facilities maintenance. He fucked up once, early on, and was told if it happened again he'd be gone. In the 12 years since, he got his GED and then went on to get his Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He's currently working on his Master's, doing online classes the University of Florida. Twelve years ago this punk kid barely had a pot to piss in, now he's making around $60K a year. We helped him along the way; covered his books and other costs. I've selected him as my next Facilities Manager. When the current one retires a year from now, this young man will be 32 years old when he gets a $30K a year pay raise.

This kid has seen the benefits of his hard work. He understands that what does or does not happen to and for him is pretty much entirely up to him. He works hard to better himself, and he's gone from being a punk kid to a respected and valued member of my team.

Walter is 31 and he happens to be black. Had he not made the decision to stop being a street thug and actually make something of himself, and start working towards that, doors started to open for him.
