Nov. 8, 2005 — -- "Saving yourself for marriage" -- once considered the norm -- has been seen as old-fashioned and out of date.

But a new survey in Seventeen magazine reveals that more teenage girls have decided against premarital sex for a number of reasons. Seventeen calls these young women members of "Generation Pure."

Nineteen-year-old Shelby Knox is one of those young women who has decided to wait to have sex. Of the 1,000 13- to 17-year-old girls surveyed by Seventeen, 44 percent have or plan to take an abstinence pledge. The Seventeen poll defined "sex" as vaginal intercourse.

"I think that purity and not having sex before marriage is an important personal decision," said Shelby. "When I was 15, I took a pledge to remain pure, sexually pure, until marriage. That was four years ago."

And despite hyper-sexualized images of young women in the media, 70 percent of the girls said they want to maintain a pure image.

Beyond the Male Myth was published in 1977. This is on page 290:

One third of men today still want to marry a virgin…only 2 percent of men would want to marry a woman who had engaged in relations with many men.

——————

It should be easy for women who want to be virgins when they get married and men who want to marry virgins to find each other.

This is good to hear. I wholly admire such women.

The Catholic faith is FULL of women who were martyred for their purity -- killed because they refused to give up their virginity, because they were brides for Christ.

Well, that was pretty stupid of them.

Frankly, I've seen nuns. Talk about some miserable women.

They'd have all been happier with some Scented Candles and Melissa Etheridge albums.

Have you seen what women look like today? Fat blue hair, crazy, face piercings. Who wants that

Um, yeah, this kind of sounds like the "old Double Standard". The girls should be virgins, the men should be 'experienced'.

Why shouldn't the men be virgins, too, when they get married?

It kind of sounds like the power dynamic of domination.

Now, I am all for teens putting off sex until they are adults, but in the real world, I know that is unlikely. So they should have adequate sex education to know how to avoid disease and unwanted pregnancy.

But let's get real. People should have sex before marriage so they know if they are sexually compatible.

Well, that's vulgar.

I think this desire for trad-wives and virginity before marriage has a lot more to do with male insecurity. They are terrified of dealing with women as equals.
Back when the Joy of Sex book came out it's not my fault that the young women wanted to explore their sexuality.....What a time that was to be alive....Perfect timing for me!

Yes, and this aligns with the religious revival going on in Gen Z. Thanks be to God

Hey, given that Hector usually likes to cite debunked racial studies from the 1970s, getting something from 2005 is actually progress for him.

Back when the Joy of Sex book came out it's not my fault that the young women wanted to explore their sexuality.....What a time that was to be alive....Perfect timing for me!
And that became a problem when HIV and other STDs became more prevalent.

But let's get real. People should have sex before marriage so they know if they are sexually compatible.

Before people get married they should have hot, sweaty, headbanging sex and a full out fight.

That way the get to see the best and worst of their relationship

That was a years before. About all you had to worry about was the clap back then.

It's also back when The Pill usage became much more wide spread.
