It's an old saying used by several schools of thought: Stoicism, Taoism, Buddhism to mention a few.
Does it ring true to you? Or are you of the mind that the unfettered acquisition of stuff is what defines your happiness?
Those follow with:
"It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's only how you play the game"
or
"Don't worry, be happy".
For me, life wasn't about acquisition but the pursuit of freedom by being economically independent. Being born poor, I wanted as much as I could achieve, to invest, to build a business and leave a legacy.
When that is taken away from someone of my ilk the only sayings that mattered were those based on justice and truth. These are a couple that I relate to:
"if you are right and you know it speak your mind. Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still the truth". -Gandhi
"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act- George Orwell.
My former legacy dreams have been stolen so now my identity revolves around exposing the truth, the abusers and making sure there is a heavy price paid, economically or otherwise just as I was destroyed economically and whatever my identity WOULD have been today if free. I wanted less long ago, even these basic pursuits were stolen. So wanting less must be a choice, not dictated by others!
Wanting and pursuing those wants is a personal choice. If one wants to be a billionaire or simply live in the forest, I will treat both with the same equal dignity if we first meet. The freedom to pursue and the Right to Self Determination is the key. Those who steal it are the enemy of good men.
Canada, due to it's unaccountable police apparatus, is a threat to these ideals. To Canada, America and other allies that it claims to be similar to.
People really don't understand that they can be financially free if they just take the time to really evaluate what they spend (waste) their money onThe peace of mind you can have with money in the bank far outweighs anything you can buy with it.
You nailed it!The peace of mind you can have with money in the bank far outweighs anything you can buy with it.
That works only if you can live off the land, or if you receive constant handouts. The less you want, the more you have.
Should be a good campaign slogan for the DNC this election cycle
Being economically independent is a lot easier if you are frugal with your money and realize that owning a bunch of crap is the best way to bankruptcy.
And how you got that I implied wanting less should be forced on others is beyond me.
Good points. The money generated by the wealthy is usually available to all, through employment, or consumer loans.I'm not saying YOU suggest that, I am saying in general some suggest that. Or in my case, FORCE it upon their citizens, as Police States are apt to do.
I have personally always been simple, I like to invest and put money to work. In the end I want the OPTION to pursue purchases, travel ad enjoy life. I've already been living a "simple life" because of the abusers in my country. If I wanted to accomulate crap, I should be free to do so and it helps others remain employed.
Society benefits when people pursue billions in wealth. So the more the merrier, as long as it comes from risk of capital and not taxpayer handouts.
The less you want, the more you have.

You tell me.Weren't the old Zen Buddhists really hypocrites who were served their daily needs by (slaves) volunteers while they prayed and contemplated life and unknowingly crafted an unattainable socialist future?
Is it not a good slogan for life?
