Trump Backtracks On Campaign Pledge To Bring Down Grocery Prices

Unfortunately most people who vote are not sane.
Trump and Co. knew that you can't just reverse prices once they've filtered through global supply chains.

Well, Trump may not, since he's illiterate on macroeconomics, but he knew that he could say just say anything.

And his credulous rube base, as well as many normal Americans, just bought it. Hook, line and sinker.

The perfect example of why I say this country deserves what it gets, for not paying attention and not thinking.

ā€œLook, thereā€™s a tradition in American politics that after you win an election, you sort of put things behind you,ā€ he told reporters inside Trump Tower. ā€œAnd if thatā€™s the decision he reached, thatā€™s perfectly consistent with sort of a historical pattern of things come up, you say a lot of things, even some bad things might happen, and then you can sort of put it behind you in order to unite the nation.ā€

This is basically Trump's attitude, and I think most of his supporters feel the same. Promises aren't important, the only thing they find important is WINNING. Even if they're losing at the same times. Like Brexit in the UK. The Brexit fan club still pretend like it's a good thing.

How in the world, in that twisted mind, does he think he's uniting the nation?

Oh well.

Because he thinks that he's the leader, and everyone else will follow once they see just how amazing his policies will be.....

He just doesn't understand that his policies are, for the most part, not very good.

if only we would have followed you mac.....

This clearly goes in the category of broken campaign promise number one. Whatā€™s next? He said he had a healthcare plan. For 20 years heā€™s been saying in two weeks he was going to release it.

Does trump think weā€™re stupid?
Trump knows his cult is.

Trump knew it from day one................

I think it's gonna be a long four years for you and the other tRumplings.

I mean his term hasn't even started and you are already having to make excuses for him.

Imagine 4 years of covering for his failures.
It took Joe a few months to turn the nation into turmoil. Tell us what the difference will make from your statement.

let's see what happens to those prices after he gets into a second tariff round with China, the EU, Mexico etc.

The president-elect walked back what was always a wildly unrealistic campaign promise.

President-elect Donald Trump admitted in an interview with Time magazine that it will be difficult for him to reduce consumer prices, contrary to statements he made on the campaign trail this year.

Trump told Time in an hourlong interview for its ā€œPerson of the Yearā€ feature that his presidency wouldnā€™t be a failure if he failed to bring the price of groceries down.

ā€œIā€™d like to bring them down. Itā€™s hard to bring things down once theyā€™re up. You know, itā€™s very hard. But I think that they will,ā€ Trump said, according to the transcript.

Trump is right that itā€™s very hard to achieve across-the-board price reductions. Curbing inflation is only a matter of slowing the rate of price increases ā€” actual economy-wide price drops typically donā€™t happen outside of a massive economic downturn.

Nevertheless, Trump repeatedly told voters during the campaign that electing him president would cause prices to tumble.

ā€œPrices will come down,ā€ Trump said during a rally in August. ā€œYou just watch: Theyā€™ll come down, and theyā€™ll come down fast, not only with insurance, with everything.ā€

ā€œWe will end inflation and make America affordable again, and weā€™re going to get the prices down, we have to get them down,ā€ Trump said at a rally in September. ā€œItā€™s too much. Groceries, cars, everything. Weā€™re going to get the prices down.ā€

ā€œWe will cut your taxes and inflation, slash your prices, raise your wages and bring thousands of factories back to America,ā€ Trump said at a Georgia rally in October, reciting a line he used in speeches at several other events.

Trump also specifically promised to get gas prices down: ā€œI will cut your energy prices in half within 12 months.ā€

Trump said during the campaign, and in his Time interview, that cutting regulations would reduce oil prices, which would supposedly drive price reductions everywhere else in the economy. One obstacle to the plan is that it would be up to energy companies, not the government, to ramp up oil production, and doing so would not necessarily be profitable for them. Another obstacle is that oil prices are set by a global market that U.S. doesnā€™t control.

Nevertheless, the idea that Trumpā€™s election would solve complex economic problems was a core message of the Trump campaign.
