Nearly a decade before catastrophic flooding in south Texas killed at least 95 people, including 27 girls and counselors from a beloved summer camp, the state’s Division of Emergency Management denied requests from the county where the camp is held for a $1 million grant to improve its flood warning system.

Summer camps were top of mind during county leaders’ discussions of the project, meeting minutes show. Then-County Commissioner Tom Moser envisioned designating point people at each camp who would monitor a website and alert camp counselors and attendees if evacuation was needed.

The Division of Emergency Management did not answer USA TODAY's specific questions about why the county's applications were rejected.

Is that MAGA I smell in the air? Now, Texas is talking about duplicating DOGE at the state level. That may have to wait until most of the law suits that will be filed against the great MAGA state of Texas. Parents are morning the loss of their children. This is beyond sad.

You are sick. You don't care about the children who died or anyone else. You only care about Trump, Trump, Trump. You have a mental illness about Trump (TDS). You can stop spreading these lies. There was plenty of warnings given days before the flooding. Even early on in the morning everyone was warned. The question is, why were they not evacuated before the rains? More money would not have made a difference. It was the choice not to evacuate. But, all you can do is think of how to hurt Trump. It was the state of Texas that denied requests, not Trump. Get some help.

That OP has nothing to do with tRump, kiddo.

I do believe we now know who is really obsessed with tRump, here.

Same thing happened in 1987 ... that's within living memory ...

The EAS was activated ... the adults didn't think to move the children out of that lowest cabin? ...

The staff received timely warning at the camp. They chose not to take any precautions because there had been countless flash flood warnings and the Guadalupe River has been out of its banks many many times without threatening any of the cabins or campers at Mystic Camp in its 99 years history. The children were all asleep and nobody was out near where the water would be expected to be.

The weather service predicted up to 6" of rain which that area has often received. Nobody predicted the amount of rain that actually fell or the degree of flash flooding that would occur.

". . .Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, the county's top elected official, said: "We know we get rain. We know the river rises. But nobody saw this coming.

"We have floods all the time. This is the most dangerous river valley in the United States," he said, adding: "We had no reason to believe this was going to be anything like what's happened here. None whatsoever.". . .{

They won't make that same mistake again.

To politicize such a terrible terrible tragedy to denigrate MAGA and Trump makes you and your ilk the reprehensible ones,

How come the democrats at the Federal level know this and do nothing about it. 2021 democrats were in charge.
2021 the democrats energy policy crippled texas leading to disaster
States rights. FEMA has been there to bail out Texas many times. I would suggest they spend more money on infrastructure and less on monitoring wombs and building walls you can walk around.

This is what JimH2 wrote. "Is that MAGA I smell in the air? Now, Texas is talking about duplicating DOGE at the state level. Who then was he talking about? You are as sick as he is. No empathy for the lost lives.

The "once in a lifetime" flooding that occurred in Texas had nothing to do with any political party. During this time of year, the soil gets very dry and hard, significantly reducing the soil's absorption ability and thus, flooding occurs in heavy rains. It happens periodically in that region. The amount of water nature dumped there just happened to be an unprecedented amount.
What's pathetic is the left constantly trying to point to anything negative that occurs anywhere, on whatever administration is in charge if it doesn't align with their narrative.
It funds rioters and protesters when they aren't running the nation and thus shows itself to be anything but believing in people being allowed to vote for the candidates of their choice or western democratic values.

Biden would’ve airdropped onto the affected areas and saved each poor soul one by one

I bet you are one of those MAGATs that yell, "It is too soon to talk about gun control." after each mass shooting. You think everyone will forget and move on after a period of time. Fact are Facts

You think MAGA would not be screaming about Biden if this happened on his watch? Think again MAGAT.

As water levels surged up to 26 feet in just 45 minutes on the Guadalupe River in Texas, leaving over 100 dead, one town emerged relatively unscathed.

Officials in the town Comfort, which borders Kerr County, credit a new warning system with playing a key part in protecting the residents. But attempts to get similar protections in other areas were previously denied due to cost.

Comfort has wailing sirens, urging residents to flee before the floodwaters hit. They went off alongside emergency phone alerts and firefighters driving the town warning people. No deaths were reported in the town.

The town had recently updated its disaster alert system, installing a new siren at the volunteer fire department's headquarters. The floods on Friday were the first time the siren was used.
