Canada has always taken a loud, public stance against Russia. That's a function of our very high Ukrainian population, the second largest diaspora outside of Russia itself.

It would be nice if Canada could be more principled on domestic civil liberties and justice...

So Russia went after the Ukraine much like America was prepared to do to Cuba back in the day. Only Putin actually did it, partially because of the threat of missiles next door, partially because they want to reclaim their land, but a lot of it has to do with Ukraine being full of the bad guys. No one can ignore for decades Ukraine was widely known as a country of smugglers, counterfeiters, sex trade pushers and general bad people but now all the sudden they are babes in the proverbial woods.

But western countries want this war. America certainly does because zelenski spoke about sitting down with Putin to figure out where this was heading and to talk but it was all but ignored. If Biden wanted to help he would have encouraged a sit down and spoke words of encouragement to foster a talk, but he didn't. He kept bad mouthing Russia and promoting Ukraine and poking the bear.
