There are an unlimited things we can do in a free society but lets examine ten of those things that we can do. The first five are 1)take care of the poor, 2)be nice to children, 3)help your neighbor, 4)cure cancer, and 5)let someone ahead of you in line. The next five have a more sinister nature and that is 6)be greedy, 7) do drugs, 8) cheat on your wife, 9) fart rudely in public, and 10) murder your wife for insurance money.
Someone at some point will want to restrain those behaviors for various reasons which defines the nature of government. A progressive would only acknowledge only the good things (items 1-5) we do and ban those sinister things we do (6-10). The founder's vision of government would have only banned item 10 not because of moral reasons but because murdering someone else violated the freedom of that person.
In their vision governments were established to protect the freedom of the individual and not to establish a perfect society but to establish a free society which gave human beings a large scope of moral and immoral behaviors to do. The only restriction on anyone's behavior was when you attempted to violate the freedom of someone else which is why only item 10 would have got banned.
