Taiwan.....an enigma

You ignore the progress China made between 1949 and 1976.
Oh stop. LOL!!
The Great Leap? Land Reforms? Cultural Revolution?
That psychopath's programs killed 40-80 million.
GDP be damned.
That's like praising a person who murdered half a town but handed out gold watches at year end to survivors.

He also fought the UN to a standstill in Korea, got China into the Nuclear Club, and played the US and USSR off against each other.
Oh, smashing job that. To what end? Ensuring the people of the DPRK have been forced to live on the edges of starvation in a Communist hellscape for 70 years?

The ****?

Hey, the 1950's called, they want their McCarthyism back.

If you weren't a crazy person, we could talk sensibly about the Great Leap Forward, which DID kill probably 15 million people (although the floods and droughts in various parts of the country contributed.)

on the other hand, Mao also brought the infant mortality rate in China down from 20% when the Communists took power to 6% (And eventually declining to 1% today.)

Life expectancy improved from 35 years in 1945 to 62 years in 1976, and today is 76 years.

No, it's actually understanding the full context of history.

As opposed to what? Do you think North Korea was a wonderful place to live before the Korean War?

the only reason why South Korea is somewhat nice is we spent the last 70 years dumping money into it.

John Gotti was like that. He used to pass out free turkeys in the neighborhood every Thanksgiving. Everybody said what a great guy he was.

Okay, and for the vast majority of the people in his neighborhood, he was.

most of the people Gotti killed or had killed were his fellow Gangster, can't get worked up about that.

Oh, and the guy who ran over his kid with a car. That guy should have had the good sense to get the hell out of town.

What islands? The ones near the Philippines? What does that have to do with Taiwan?

Somethings missing in that sentence.

Have you looked at a map recently? Japan is nowhere near Taiwan. Okinawa has a huge US military presence, or did you forget?
Yonaguni, Japan's most western inhabited island, is 70 miles from Taiwan. That's close. US is placing NMESIS missile system there.

Who is "we" Kimosabe?

How do blockade an island when all of your ships are on the bottom?
One China policy makes it clear the US has no legitimate interest.

Hypersonic missiles and drone swarms will remove any defenses long before the blockage. Nor does the blockade need to all that close or even within range of Taiwanese defenses. The Chinese need only block access from three directions, there will be no aid arriving from the west side. Unless a country has some form of treaty with Tiawan this is an internal matter. Running a blockade is an offense against China as would be violating any no fly zone. Legally China holds the cards. Also the public would lose interest quickly with a blockade, too boring.

Actually, it's way different.
Taiwan is more like Napoleon and Corsica than a rebel colony.
An exile island for a long-defeated, long-dead generalissimo.
Even though Chiang was a corrupt prick, he was nothing compared to that absolute demon, Mao.
Mao was one of the great murderers in world history.
But I'm not sure this sick **** is much better.

"Legally"? WTF you talkin about Willis?

I'm talking international law and who would be the belligerent if they interfere in an internal Chinese matter. Any move on Taiwan will not play out like that Ukraine shit show.

That really isn't the case any longer under Trump is it? It never really has been. in reality. We have provided Taiwan with numerous weapons systems over the decades.

If China tries to impose a blockade, we will not honor it and sink the first Chinese ship that tries to enforce it.

You said phony islands.
China created islands in the South China Sea, which would make patrolling the South and Eastern approaches to Taiwan much easier.

My point was, no one cares about international law. The Chinese certainly don't, they've been thumbing their noses at it for the past 20 years.

The Spratly and Paracel Islands are nowhere near Taiwan. They are closer to Hong Kong.

They're much farther south (which is why people are concerned).

They're between Vietnam and Indonesia.

An area that has zero to do with Chinese national security.
