Founded by the Chinese but now separatist the Taiwanese face a true paradox of future identity.
At one time I thought it was inevitable that Taiwan would simply be reabsorbed into the Chinese mainland. Now I'm not so sure. The flavor of freedom has broken loose on the Taiwanese people and they have the example of Hong Kong to see what the CCP thinks of free choice.
Now being bolstered by Western military aid Taiwan will be a tough nut to crack even for an up-and-coming superpower like China.
Aside from the fact that the Chinese population is roughly 60 times greater than the Taiwanese population.... China has made a miraculous leap forward in military might over the past decade.
Even the United States would have to think twice about engaging them directly. However Taiwan is an island.... And at this point well defended. Would China be willing to pay the heavy price it would most certainly cost to take it by force?
This isn't too different from when the United States declared its independence from England. The one big difference being that this Goliath is a whole hell of a lot bigger than the English Goliath was to the colonials....
If China decided to use it's rather impressive naval military might to blockade Taiwan completely...
I am at a loss to say how exactly anyone could do anything about it.
Enter stage left Japan and the United States and maybe Australia and the Philippines and you might have a strong argument for breaking such a blockade. Would that start world war 3?
I don't know.
It all depends on who is in charge of the country.
People think that Xi is in charge, but from what I've heard, over the summer Xi stopped being in charge of the country. He's head of state, but he does not dictate policy.
He's very much like Trump in that he wanted to go down in history. He had his "Xi Jinping thoughts" and they've kind of disappeared.
The armed forces in China are like a separate powerbase.
However there was a purge of the armed forces after Xi kind of got demoted (obviously not officially or in public).
Three high-ranking Chinese military officials expelled for corruption
China's parliament has expelled three top military officials in a significant anti-corruption drive. Wang Renhua, Zhang Hongbing, and Wang Peng have been removed from their positions. This action follows speculation due to their recent absences from key military events. The crackdown, led by...
"Three high-ranking Chinese military officials expelled for corruption"
The problem with corruption in China is THEY'RE ALL CORRUPT. To be a top CCP official you are expected to be corrupt. You can't pay for your promotion without being corrupt. So they can get rid of you super easy.
In China once you have a job, and have passed the probation period, it's difficult to get rid of that person. It's literally an art form of how you fire people without having to pay them loads of money.
And the same seems to happen high up. They keep everyone corrupt, and then take them out by having that "anti-corruption drive".
This drive has been happening for a while. But who is directing this drive? And why?
Hard to know. Could be that they're putting the economy first, and not invading Taiwan. Could be these people didn't want to invade Taiwan. Who knows? But something has changed, and the anti-Taiwan sentiment seems to have dropped lower in recent times (even though they had a military drill around Taiwan the other day).
