Call them what you will, Lee and Jackson renounced United States citizenship, rejected the United States Constitution, and took up arms against United States troops defending the United States on United States soil. You need to look up the word traitor and pick up a US history book....
[One statue] was dedicated in 1921 and the former in 1924, a few days after the Ku Klux Klan held a major rally at the site. That’s no coincidence, as that was the Klan’s heyday and the height of segregation and Jim Crow, when lynchings in the south were still common.
It was a struggle and exacted a price, but effigies erected by racists in the 1920s do not belong anywhere in the United States.
Unite the Right rally was a white supremacist rally that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, from August 11 to 12, 2017. Far-right groups participated, including self-identified members of the alt-right, neo-Confederates, neo-fascists, white nationalists, neo-Nazis, Klansmen, and various right-wing militias. Some groups chanted racist and antisemitic slogans and carried weapons, Nazi and neo-Nazi symbols, Confederate battle flags, and other symbols of various past and present anti-Islamic and anti-Semitic groups. The organizers' stated goals included unifying the American white nationalist movement and opposing the proposed removal of the statue of General Robert E. Lee from Charlottesville's former Lee Park.
The far-right rally and demonstration over a weekend in August 2017 erupted in violent clashes with counter-protesters, leading ultimately to counter-protester Heather Heyer being murdered when a white supremacist rammed his car into a crowd...
She was a counter-protester that weekend, when many extremists were seen wearing Ku Klux Klan regalia, military-style garb or a variety of other outfits often associated with the far right, some carrying weapons and paraphernalia with neo-Nazi symbols.
