Define "underclass". Bear in mind that the American economy has ALWAYS relied upon a pool of cheap/free labour with no road to citizenship, since before its founding. First it was the slaves, then the Chinese "guest workers", and then "illegals".

That every group of immigrants has been villified as somehow "subhuman". When my mother was growing up, it was the Irish. When I was young, it was the Italians. Blacks were ALWAYS on the very bottom. The Irish were at least white. The Italians were NOT considered "white" - "swarthy" was the description.

I learned early on in my life that every ethnic group looked down on by other ethnic groups, unless you were white, of British descent, and Protestant. WASP to the core.

Who's "we?" Mental illness and wickedness are too different things. Mentally ill people deserve therapy. Wicked people deserve punishment. There are two important functions of punishment: deterrence and revenge. I recommend sixty lashes with a cat o' nine tails, followed by a life sentence at a slave labor camps, and a slow hanging if the woman dies. The flogging and the hanging should be on live television to deter those thinking about playing the knockout game, and to provide revenge for the woman, her relatives, and her friends.

This man never should have fallen through the cracks like he did. He should have gotten medication and hospitalization long before this.
The ironic thing is now that he's in custody and will start getting his meds, he's probably going to feel very bad about this whole situation.
