Missouri is a "Castle Doctrine" state and as such, homeowners can use "lethal" force to protect themselves and their property. Once they saw the mob break down the private property gate that restricts entry and head in their direction, they were generally concerned for not only their safety, but for their property being seriously damaged, as constant footage of mobs violent actions across the US, is fed to the public via the media. Unless the court and jury criminally ignore the "Castle Doctrine," they'll go home vindicated in their actions.
In states without "Stand Your Ground" or "Castle Doctrine" laws, you're pretty much screwed, unless they actually barge through your door in a menacing manner.

The operative words in that sentence are: "Peacefully assemble."
