No it isn't true that this is a "focus" for Canadians. Most of our population does live within 90 miles of the US Border, but that isn't out of any desire to be close to the USA.
Just like the USA, the warmest parts of Canada, are the most populated.
The further north you go in Canada, the colder it gets. Southern Ontario, where I live is on the same latitude as northern California.
