Replacing Teachers

The no-homework practice reflects a few ideas. One is that the classroom should be flipped. Students hear new material on their own and the classroom allows for guided practice.

Another is the understanding that AI makes work assigned at home inherently suspect.

Read Chapter 2 tonight and we will discuss it tommorrow.

Tomorrow comes and not one student read the assignment.

How do you think that would work in real life? No, what do we do?

It would be exactly like I said. We have done this before, and it fails every time.

There's a shock.

When I left Detroit Public Schools the counselors told me other than what she taught me at home, I learned nothing. It wasn't so bad in kindergarden and 1st grade but when the school went 100% black, the teachers left and the black ones who replaced them were horrible people. My mom worked at the school. We were white, the principle was white but EVERYONE ELSE was black. We were not popular even with the teachers because they were racists. It was the 70's I don't blame them. Not too long after the Detroit riots. White flight. The place went to shit.

Anyways, we were the last whites to leave. Those poor kids learn nothing. They don't have a chance when they turn 18.

Out in the suburbs they let me skate. I was a skater. Do the minimum. Lazy. Would you hold me back? Maybe they should have. I would have won states if they did. When I took 5th I was only 17 years old. Wrestling 18 year olds. And I only wrestled 3 years. Imagine giving me one more year to wrestle in highschool. Shit. I'd a been a beast.

So I got a college scholarship and literally didn't know how to study or learn. The first semester I got all C's and 1 C-. I was so happy. I passed every class! But then I got the letter. Academic probabtion. All C's and 1 C- is under a 2.0. The next semester I forced myself to learn how to study and I got a 3.7 that semester. That shows you I did not want to be the one who dropped out of college and went back home to live with mom and dad. No way I was going to let that happen. That was my motivation. It was tough.

I had a tough start being born a poor black child and all. In the city of Detroit

I'm not arguing with that. I am just saying that this was how the wind blew about 5 years ago.

How about I'll read chapter two in class today and we will discuss it tomorrow. If I read slow then I'll finish at home. But don't load me up with bullshit. I have a life too you know. School is for learning. Outside of school is for other shit.

Like I said, don't give me too much, and give me the 45 minutes in your class to read. You walk around and answer questions. If I can't finish the reading in class, I'll finish up after supper. But 2 hours of homework? Not gonna happen. So your system sucks and it's setting a lot of kids up to fail.

Which is why they just need to continue letting slackers get by. You aren't going to turn the burnouts into mathameticians. Just make sure they can do +- divided by and multiply and percentages. That's all I ever do.

When I began teaching, we still used blackboards and chalk. What a mess.
When I switched jobs 20 something g years ago, I walked into a new school and a new class and took out the chalk I was carrying and wrote my name on the green blackboard.

Except it was the green bulletin board. First day.

I remember when we started using white boards, this one teacher I was working with found out the hard way she was allergic to the Expo dry erase markers.

The dumbest person that I know was not one of the 3,200 steelworkers that were in our plant. A retired (thankfully) Special Ed teacher who I traveled to at least a dozen CW battlefields with does not accept Evolution as fact and believes Adam and Eve were real people. It wasn`t easy to not laugh at this idiot. I asked him why he doesn`t accept the solid science of Evolution and his answer was "because we have God". Unfortunately, I`m not making this up. Our Civil War trips went well considering we had opposite views on slavery. Ya, he`s that dumb and yes, he`s one of Trump`s loyal morons.
