Pump prices set to rise as Trump tariffs hit Canadian, Mexican oil

We’ve only been using the income tax since 1913. How do you think we funded ourselves before that? You are absurd.

We funded two World Wars and a Cold War that we won -- with an income tax. We were a piss-weak largely regional force before then. If you want to project global economic, political, and military power, that costs money.

So as I said, you're being absurd here. Time to put down whatever Super MAGA Man comic books you're reading and step back into the real world for a moment.

We are also $40 trillion in debt.

“U.S. consumers will see higher prices at the gas pump from President Donald Trump's decision on Saturday to apply tariffs on Canadian and Mexican oil, according to analysts and fuel traders.

The likely hike in fuel prices reflects the double-edged nature of Trump's trade protections which are designed to bolster domestic business and pressure U.S. neighbors to curb illegal immigration and drug smuggling, but which will also run counter to his promises to tackle inflation.

The U.S. imports some 4 million barrels per day of Canadian oil, 70% of which is processed by refiners in the Midwest. It also imports over 450,000 bpd of Mexican oil, mainly for refiners concentrated around the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Tariffs on those imports mean higher costs for making finished fuels like gasoline, much of which is likely to be passed along to U.S. consumers.”

Higher costs for Trump voters, the consequence of their ignorance and stupidity.
/—-/ We can produce all of the oil and refined gas we need. No need to import.

We are also $40 trillion in debt.

It wasn't always this way, though. Despite the significant growth of the federal government, our debt/GDP ratio was relatively stable until the 1980s. Guess what happened then?

Stupid trade deals and later stupid expensive wars.

Things that President Trump is undoing.

If tariffs are so bad, why are Canada and Mexico threatening to retaliate with their own tariffs?

Wouldn’t they just be rising prices on their own citizens?
It's called economics, supply and demand, as the consumer price rises, demand falls hurting the supplier in Mexico.

Yet China's getting lower tariffs than the Canadians despite the fact that the vast majority of fentanyl comes from the southern border. Tariffs on Canada make no sense. Seems like the only reason to tariff China is the fact that Canadians think we're stupid. We're not exactly disabusing them of that notion right now.
We already had tariffs against China...another 10% was added. This bullshit with China poisoning America with drugs that they are running into America through Mexico and Canada stops now.

The United States imports oil to meet its energy needs, even though it produces some oil. This is because the US produces different types of crude oil than what its refineries can process, and it can be cheaper to import oil from other countries.

Why does the US import oil?
  • Oil quality
The US primarily produces light, sweet crude oil, but refineries need to process different types of crude oil. For example, heavy crude oil is cheaper and can be used to make diesel, jet fuel, and petrochemicals.

  • Infrastructure
The US needs pipelines to transport oil to refineries.

    • Global trade agreements
The US often sells oil to other countries, and imports oil from countries that are willing to pay more.
    • Global oil markets
Global oil markets are interconnected, so the US can import oil from countries like Canada or Saudi Arabia that can ship it directly to refineries.
Petroleum is the most-consumed energy source in the US, used to heat buildings, power vehicles, and produce electricity.

Would those be the pipelines that you on the Left wouldn't allow to be built, Moonie?

The Keystone pipeline is in operation. The Keystone XL was not built during Trump's first administration.

The United States has over 2.5 million miles of pipelines, which is enough to circle the Earth about 100 times. These pipelines include oil pipelines, natural gas pipelines, and carbon dioxide pipelines.
Some pipelines built in the United States between 2021 and 2024 include:
  • Borger Express Pipeline
A 90,000-barrel-per-day pipeline that transports crude oil from Oklahoma to Texas. It was completed in 2023.

  • Saginaw Trail Pipeline
A $610 million pipeline that replaced and expanded natural gas pipelines in Michigan. It entered service in late 2020.

  • Blackcomb Pipeline
A natural gas pipeline that will transport gas from the Permian Basin to Agua Dulce, Texas. It is expected to enter service in 2026.

We already tariff China. How is an additional 10% gonna stop drugs coming through Mexico?

No, more like stupid defense spending at a time when taxes were cut (Reagan). Then even more defense spending after taxes were cut again (GW Bush). Then the Great Recession (GW Bush). The more spending (Obama) while McConnell's GOP blocked more tax increases. Then pandemic stimulus after major tax cuts (MAGA Jesus).
