AMERICAN employers have announced over 1.1 million layoffs so far in 2025, the highest numbers since the COVID-19 pandemic shook our country’s workforce five years ago.

As employers and workers grapple with uncertain economic conditions, the number of layoffs across the country so far this year has ticked upwards to an astounding 1.17 million jobs.

This marks a 54% increase from the same time last year, according to a report on Thursday from consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

The layoffs are at the highest numbers for the American workforce since 2020 when over 2.2 million cuts were announced through November.
