Pete Hegseth tells Europe that the free ride is over
Itās high time that America pulled the plug on ungrateful nations, so I hope its actions match Hegsethās rhetoric.
Pete Hegseth tells Europe that the free ride is over
Itās high time that America pulled the plug on ungrateful nations, so I hope its actions match Hegsethās rhetoric.
Beginning with Woodrow Wilsonās justification for getting America into WWI, America has been the worldās policeman, a role that escalated after it was the only wealthy nation standing in 1945. However, itās not 1945 anymore. The Cold War is over, allegiances have shifted, and Europe is not Europe. Thatās why it was simply awesome today when Secretary of War Pete Hegseth explicitly told Asia and Europe (although he was clearly speaking to NATO) that the ātime for free-riding is over.ā
In 1916, when the āGreat Warā in Europe was already in its second year, Woodrow Wilson won reelection in part by pointing out that heād kept America out of the war and promising that he would continue to do so. However, for myriad reasons, by 1917, Wilson could no longer maintain that promise.
However, Wilson, a high-minded, racist, eugenics-believing progressive, needed a high-minded reason for tossing young American men into those bloody trenches. America, he said, was a savior. āThe world must be made safe for democracy,ā and America was the one to do it.
There was no room for self-interest:
We desire no conquest, no dominion. We seek no indemnities for ourselves, no material compensation for the sacrifices we shall freely make.
Instead, virtue would be its own reward:We are but one of the champions of the rights of mankind. We shall be satisfied when those rights have been made as secure as the faith and the freedom of nations can make them.
~Snip~Throughout it all, though, we clung to those Wilsonian maxims. We neither sought conquest nor dominion, nor did we seek recompense for our efforts.
Indeed, as the years went by, Democrats began to argue that, not only should we not seek material benefits from our sacrifices, but that we shouldnāt achieve any benefits at all. The best wars would be fought in ways that would harm us as penance for our dual sins of slavery (ended in 1865 with a bloody civil war) and prosperity.

So, here we are in 2026, fighting a war that benefits Europe perhaps more than it benefits America. Yes, we do not want Iran to go nuclear. And no, itās not analogous to North Korea, which we are not fighting, because North Korea is a hermit kingdom that wants to be left alone.
Throughout it all, though, we clung to those Wilsonian maxims. We neither sought conquest nor dominion, nor did we seek recompense for our efforts.

All things considered, the most logical thing in the world would have been for Europe to aid America and Israel in the current military action. Instead, possibly because European governments are afraid of their growing, strident, radicalized Muslim populations, and because they are filled with America-hating leftists, Europe has done almost nothing to help in this fight, and refuses to step up to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
So, today, Pete Hegseth let them have it:

Geopolitics will be upturned by the end of this military action, in ways we cannot predict. However, there is a good chance that when the dust settles, Europe will have lost Uncle Sam as its sugar daddy.
Commentary:
Pete Hegseth is right. Europe has become a lost cause once they let socialism in their front door. It was quite sad that the UK kicked Churchill out of office in favor of socialism.
They're now teetering on becoming a third world nation.
Europe as a whole as kicked Christianity out of their house, let 'Wokism' in along with the muzzy hoards.
NATO did everything they could to box in Russia whereas Russia became a serious enemy to all of the west. Whatās funny here is NATO thought they had that big brother to fight their Russian war for them.
Trump entered the room and gave them the middle finger.
Unfortunately, Europe as a whole has looked down upon the U.S. negatively as a lesser entity.
Trump would be correct in cutting Europe loose and withdraw from NATO and create a different foreign policy approach to Europe.
Leave NATO entirely after the Eurocrats tried forcing us into WWIII in support of Ukraine. They are not worth Article 5 protections.
Let them shiver in the warmth provided by a Northern European solar farm on a bright December day and rely on gas and fuel delivered to them by whimsical Russia.
Thereās more than just freeing the Persians and keeping the Straits open at stake here. The Mullahs in Iran are a big part of whatās allowing the CCP and BRICS to hold a knife to our throat.
I donāt want another protracted war, and I donāt want the politics of that worry to cost us the midterms, but I really wish Trump would just go in there and completely wipe the Mullahs out - Europe or no Europe.
