Memorial for murdered Sinti and Roma to be erected in Vienna

I subscribe to ORF on Facebook, and they reported that a memorial for the Sinti and Roma is being erected in Vienna. However, I was shocked and saddened by most of the user comments. One woman even said it wasn't necessary because it would happen again; she suggested the money should be spent on Austrian pensioners instead. Why would it happen again, she asked? How is that supposed to be interpreted? To me, it sounded like a threat. Perhaps I'm wrong, hopefully. Most people said it was a waste of money and good publicity for the FPÖ (Freedom Party of Austria) because more people will vote for them.

I find this very important because even today, Roma are the most negatively perceived ethnic group. In the media, they are often still portrayed as a "traveling people," even though nowadays only isolated groups live in caravans. The fact that hatred towards Roma is linked to dark skin, poverty, and their ancestry is rarely addressed in public discourse. It was a genocide, and there were racial laws; even someone with just one Roma great-grandparent could be considered a "Gypsy half-breed." This is still rarely acknowledged.
