Iraqi army declares first major victory over Islamic State in Ramadi
Iraq's army declared victory over Islamic State fighters in a provincial capital west of Baghdad on Sunday, the first major triumph for the U.S.-trained force since it collapsed in the face of an assault by the militants 18 months ago.
Television also showed nighttime celebrations in mainly Shi'ite cities south of Baghdad for the victory in Anbar, with people dancing in the streets and waving Iraqi flags from cars.
A U.S.-led coalition is waging an air campaign against Islamic State, but rebuilding the Iraqi army to the point that it could recapture and hold territory has been one of the biggest challenges.
Ramadi was the first major city recaptured by the army itself, without relying on the militias, who were kept off the battlefield to avoid sectarian tension with the mainly Sunni population.

What this shows us is how Republicans fucked up the entire country when they disbanded the mostly Sunni Iraq military. Isis knew the area since many of their top commanders were from the Iraq military that the GOP chased away. Suddenly, after Republicans threw their jobs away, these well trained soldiers had no way to take care of their families. Ha, families. Why would Republicans care about families there when they don't care about families here?
You can't divide up a country, light the match to spark a civil war and expect it to just go away. Look at how long our civil war took.
Seems Obama was right to leave advisers. Obama was right to build a coalition. After Republican divided the county, that one, but they divide this one too, obviously. By disbanding the Iraq military, Republicans divided the country and turned the two halves on each other. If we followed Linda Grahame and John McCain and sent in troops, we would be fighting Iraq, Iran and Isis. This is why it's so important to keep Republicans away from our foreign policy.
Ever notice Republicans don't really build anything? Not since the Interstate Highway system and NASA more than half a century ago.
Took a long time to even begin climbing out the odious mess the GOP left in Iraq, but hopefully, Obama will keep leading from behind.
