We have to be careful about tearing down these monuments to these explorers. In the 15th or 16th centuries you would be hard pressed to find saints on any continent or country. Wars, human sacrifice, oppression, disease, etc. were the norm in one form or another for most nations or people and not the exception. The early European explorers were definitely not saints nor some even good people, but they were the driving force that drove civilization. Nothing will change that.

The unfortunate truth is that human history is about the migration, displacement and assimilation of peoples.

I like going to these monuments as they offer reflection and sense of history. That is why they should remain.

But while I would never support vandalizing a statue to Columbus, or support removing a beloved one in Little Italy, clearly one doesn’t belong in an area where Native Americans live, where it can be a provocation and a political statement.

The context in which statues are appreciated, or ignored by all but the pigeons, is important. If the direct descendants of Columbus and Spanish Conquistadors in the Dominican Republic raised the portrait of Columbus demanding special expanded immigration to the U.S., would our Conservatives be sympathetic?

Marion, I've done some research on the man who said all that stuff about Columbus. He was a straight up Good Guy who first went to Hispaniola as a layman and later became a Catholic priest. He originally was part of Columbus's "team," owned slaves himself, but he became opposed to slavery and was an advocate for better treatment for the native Americans for 50 years. The rumors of all the atrocities Columbus and his men were committing reached the ear of the King and Queen, which is why Columbus was removed from power. This priest whose letter gets spread around showing Columbus's cruelty was not the only person who was talking about it at the time.
