Conservatism for the nonwealthy in America is an irrational response whereby, instead of voting for one's self-interests, those less well-off in society often empathize with the one group that is largely responsible for placing them in their economic predicament.

The wealthy, in America, have done a masterful job of deflecting criticism away from themselves and "scapegoating" others (politicians, Washington, the poor, liberals, socialists, Democrats, the media, minorities, unions, teachers, etc).

My take on the current difference between liberalism and conservatism is a contrasting view in what the function of government should be. Liberals currently see government as the solution to all problems and wish for it's power to increase. Conservatives see government an impediment to solving problems and wish for it's power to be contained.
