Despite what many people seem to think (and not a few here have said), native Spanish speakers in the US do not "refuse" or are disinterested in learning English. No one knows the crucial importance of learning English more than non-native English speakers in the US.
It's not so much the language as the culture and assimilation. If you go around carrying Mexican flags at protests, I don't care what language you speak. You clearly are not assimilating into the American melting pot and should go to where your allegiance lies.Despite what many people seem to think (and not a few here have said), native Spanish speakers in the US do not "refuse" or are disinterested in learning English. Up here in the NE I see Irish, Italian, Portuguese, etc. flags on cars and in front of houses every day. It's not so much the language as the culture and assimilation. Do they think of themselves as Irish, Italian or Portuguese first and Americans second? Do they bring Irish, Italian, or Portuguese flags to anti-ICE protests? No. They mostly seem to being Mexican flags. Odd, isn't it?Up here in the NE I see Irish, Italian, Portuguese, etc. flags on cars and in front of houses every day.
Cop out. But I say If they do, then they are no different than the people waving Mexican flags and should go back to where their allegiance lies.I don't pull over and ask everyone I see.
Don't be obtuse. Culture and assimilation matter. Get that into your head.Really? Immigration status doesn't matter, just the ownership of a flag?
...
My wife is a naturalized 1st Chinese American and she would NEVER hang a Chinese flag in her home or car! She's an American now and would be the first one to tell you that.
No just look at their words and actions. That tells you everything you need to know. You seriously want me to pull everyone over and ask them?
I'm not sure you do. You focused entirely on language in this thread.I know that as well as anyone.
How is that?If asked in the right way, she would certainly say she is Chinese.
And not showing up to political protests holding Irish, Italian and Portuguese flags.Their actions are driving their cars and living in their houses.
