Funny I was just talking to my step daughter about how the costs have gone up.
I remember when a fresh loaf of Italian bread cost 10 cents in Brooklyn.
A 32 ounce bottle of Schneider's soda was 15 cents and you got 5 cent back if you brought the empty bottle back. That was in the late 1940's.
Man, you are OLD!

I have no idea who has control over our money supply so let's ask Ai

No, the President of the United States does not have direct control over the currency or its printing. These responsibilities fall under the jurisdiction of specific government agencies, primarily the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve System, which operate independently from the President to ensure economic stability and prevent political interference.

my mom worked the federal reserve at one point and I doubt she knew this answer if I asked
The treasury works for the President. It is part of the Executive Branch. Trump nominated the Sec of the Treasury and he was confirmed by the Senate. Never trust AI.

Bring back the

Yes, and rename it after Denali instead of McKinley!

the core debate is can HE just do that legally?

we have billions of penny's in circulation so if we stopped in 2025 we would not run out for 30 years

I could see the mint making special proof coins for collectors like they do

I have not bought one for age but I do have full proof sets of all our coins

retailers will round up for their favor most likely
Of course he can. In the event there was a penny shortage the government could offer to buy back pennies from the people at something like 1.1 cents and it would still be cheaper than minting new ones. Sometimes saving money more about losing less.

Shit, just the pennies I have in jars would last the country 20 years.

My wife is a grandma three times over and she knows how to use a debit and credit card. How young are you?
not 70+!
I use a 2% CC 99% of the time and only use cash if the system is down which is not often.
I don't use electronic transfer, I have not wrote a check in decades

I don't care to come home with a pocket full of change, store it, wrap it and take it to the bank

that said the penny is historic but I don't really need it for legal tender, as noted if they make proof sets
I can enjoy the penny all nice and new

and..........the next liberal that becomes president and it will likely happen at some point they just reverse and start making them again unless there is a huge outcry from the public
currently enough pennies in circulation you will have the actual penny for 40+ years

they are not just going to melt them all down so we can all relax

Yep!, I'll be 89 in a few months. In those days, my mom could send me to the store without worry and I'd have the money given to me to pay for the items and bring them home.
I'll give you another oldie. the trolley, train an bus fare was 5 cents, it went to 10 cents in 1948. Today the same train or bus ride costs $2.90. The Express Bus base fare is $7, and the 7-Day Unlimited Express Bus Plus pass $64.
Today I wouldn't allow children out side without a chaperon.
The streets of Brooklyn and Queens today are dangerous.

It has everything to do with it.

Copper (you know, a REAL penny) is sneaking up on 3¢ in value with today's currency.

The "dollar" of today buys what about 5¢ did in 1913.
I have some five and ten dollar gold pieces I dug-up relic hunting. I would not be selling them at face value I can assure you. ;)

Another piece of wasteful spending ended. Subsidizing production of the penny was stupid. This was long past due.

/---/ As a coin collector, I have about a thousand pennies, mostly wheat and made of copper. The older Lincoln Memorials are worth $1 each if MS65. Newer zinc are only valuable if they have mint errors. I wonder how they will move in value
