LOL...he didn't keep them out of the House chamber...he kept them from breaking through the doors leading to the hallway leading to the door into the House chamber! That wasn't heroic. It was uncalled for. Out of all the law enforcement personnel there that day he was the ONLY one that fired his gun and he did it to shoot an unarmed female protester that hadn't hurt anyone! By the time those protesters that were with Babbitt managed to get into the House Chamber it too would have been empty! So what did Byrd accomplish by shooting a protester? Nothing. He panicked. He panicked and shot someone that didn't need to be killed. It's something he'll have to live with for the rest of his life.
The door to the House chamber was just a few feet away from Ashes and it was not barricaded.
