We moved to Miami in the mid-'50's. Guess what, I met blacks for the first time. I was 9 years old.

In what areas of the world were women regarded as equals?
In 19th century America, were Native Peoples, orientals, Irish, Italians regarded as equals with the majority?
What we consider outlandish today was common. Children worked in factories. Waterways were flooded with filth. Workers died on railways and in mines in droves. Food and medicine had no overview for their production.
Has society progressed? Have attitudes improved?
No war was fought to improve those things. One was fought to preserve a Nation that could and did improve. Economics played heavily in the sparks to that conflict. Slavery was an inextricable element in those economics. A federated, united country emerged that was capable of achieving what a divided one never would have. It is difficult for most of us to lament the South that lost.

I think the difference is the EP wasn't a "law" of the United States. It was a military order effective in occupied war territory (the Confederacy had by definition left the United States).

The EP did not "declare slavery illegal". It only declared that those who had been slaves in certain occupied territory were freed of their status. Actually abolition of Slavery was effected by the 13th Amendment in December of 1865, at which time none of the seceded states had been readmitted yet.
