The error, in my opinion, is not in allowing convicted criminals who have served their sentences—who have “paid their debt to society”—to have all of their rights restored. In general, I am in favor of that.
The error is in allowing particularly violent and dangerous criminals ever to achieve this status. When one has proven—through a sufficient pattern of dangerous and violent criminal behavior—that he cannot be trusted in free society, then the remedy is to permanently remove him from free society, to either put him to death, or else to keep him in prison for the rest of his life, with no chance of parole.
