This guy was truly otherworldly. I had Maynard records, tapes, then CDs all during my formative years. Everything I do musically is heavily influenced by his work. Other kids were listening to top-40 garbage, I was getting me some real music.

Here's a few choice numbers from one of my favorite Maynard albums, "Storm" which really was a tour de force for Ferguson. Enjoy:

Brubeck is in a different universe.

He came up with time signatures that only Zappa could make head or tails out of.
LOL! Maynard practically invented 5/4, which is actually quite a trick. You gotta remember Maynard goes all the way back to the 50s and dominated until he died in 2006.

First word?

C'mon now. Jelly Roll Morton? Charlie Parker?

As for the last word, they're still making great jazz down in NOLA.

How about a good middle word?

Here's my favorite Maynard song:

Excellent, anyone posting about Jazz is AOK in my book.

I got into Jazz in college, my first album was Les McCann and Eddie Harris live at the Montreux Jazz Fest, sweet. Then from there I continued buying Jazz albums.

I would put on my Jazz at my parties in college, a lot of the drunks would be yelling out, "Turn that shit off!"

You're drinking beer out of my keg, you're listening to my jazz.

What you should have done, is instead of a keg, have a bunch of vat. Then you could have spiked it with GHB or roofies. Then they would have been too sedated to complain about the music.

Not a huge Jazz fan, just love Jazz from New Orleans. Past and present.
