Let me explain to you our best of all times president

Robert W IOW I don't always agree with Trump and I definitely wouldn't invite him to a dinner party, but he's still a LOT better than having Kamala Harris, I would have just preferred having Regan more.

Reagan's stupid joke almost triggered a nuclear holocaust because one Russian command took it seriously and went on high alert.

I voted for Reagan twice, because I was 18 and didn't know any better.

Since then, I have to evaluate the damage he's done.

1) He made "Borrow and Spend" acceptable by cutting taxes on the rich. If you want someone to blame for our 30 trillion deficit, thank Reagan.

2) He gave the green light to union-busting that has demolished the middle class in this country.

3) He ramped up the policy of funding "Freedom Fighters" to annoy Soviet allied regimes, like the Mujahedin in Afghanistan (which later morphed into the Taliban and Al Qaeda) and the Contras in Nicaragua (which made big money by flooding our streets with crack cocaine).

4) He engaged in the kind of reckless deregulation that led to the 1990 S&L Crisis and eventually the 2008 crash.

But he was a damned sight better than Trump. The problem is, of course, that the policies he pursued would be blasphemy to the Orange Cult.

  • He gave amnesty to 3 million undocumented immigrants.
  • He appointed moderates to the Supreme Court
  • He supported the Brady Bill
  • He raised taxes when it was clear that Supply Side wasn't working (which is why Bush had to do his "Read my Lips" pledge that he broke.

So why is he well-regarded today by Republicans?

Because he's the only Republican in the last 50 years who wasn't voted out of office (Trump, Bush, Ford), put us into a recession at the end of the term (Trump, Bush-43, Bush-41, Ford, Nixon), or was impeached (Trump, Nixon).
I'm glad a read the thread before posting so I didn't have to type all that, lol.

I'm very clear on the Soviet Collapse.

Reagan had nothing to do with it and never saw it coming... probably because his brain was already turning into pudding from the Alzheimers.
No, you are not clear. Reagan was who caused the Soviets to collapse. Bush got a break since it happened when he was president, but Bush did not target the Soviets.
The old fall back making the claim that the man you voted for 2 times had the disease when he was president. He had left office years later and announced it to the public when it happened.

Some of you forgot Ronald Reaganl. Never knew of his wit and ways to explain politics. The achievements of this giant may never ever be exceeded. Trump needs to play this over and over and he could be loved. Reagan was loved by Americans. We elected him twice. He even could get the Soviets to laugh. When the program was supposedly not broadcasting yet, he said on the mike, in so many words that the Soviets never would rise because he just declared war on them and it was a joke.

Enjoy the real Ronald Reagan and please ChristisKing, if you never heard this or did earlier, let me know what you think of Reagan.

President Reagan's economic policies, known as "Reaganomics," aimed to stimulate growth through deregulation, tax cuts, and reduced social spending, resulting in mixed outcomes: a prolonged peacetime expansion with lower inflation and unemployment, alongside a tripled national debt from $997 billion to $2.85 trillion, rising income inequality, and a shift from a creditor to a debtor nation.

Even you admit Reagan scared the hell out of the Soviets. When did Bush scare them?

Could not have been too bad since Democrats allege Clinton fixed all of that.

Reagan was who caused the Soviets to collapse.
Wrong. He did not "cause" as you imply, as if it was he alone (Trump-speak :auiqs.jpg:).

In June 1987, Reagan challenged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down" the Berlin Wall. Two years later, the Wall came down, then the enslaved nations of the Soviet Empire gradually broke free, and the Soviet Union collapsed.

Reagan's predecessors, to be sure, deserve credit for keeping the Soviets at bay for more than thirty years. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev also deserves credit for his unwillingness to forcibly crush the rebellion in the satellite nations during 1989-1991. Others who meaningfully contributed to the downfall of the Soviet Empire include Pope John Paul II, the courageous dissident groups within the Empire, and the Western armed forces that stood watch and sometimes fought on the Eurasian periphery and elsewhere during the "long twilight struggle." But when all is said and done, it was Ronald Reagan who seized the moment and instituted the right policies at the right time to bring about the Soviet collapse.

And the Soviet Union did not "tear down" any Wall.

The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, when East German authorities (NOT THE SOVIETS!), intending to lift minor travel restrictions, accidentally announced immediate, free passage to the West. Thousands of East Berliners rushed checkpoints, forcing guards to open the gates, triggering the collapse of Communist rule, reuniting Berlin, and accelerating the end of the Cold War. [1, 2, 3]
Key Aspects of the Fall:
  • Growing Pressure: In 1989, East Germans protested against the regime, and thousands fled to the West through Hungary, creating severe internal pressure on the government.
  • The Announcement: On November 9, 1989, East German official Günter Schabowski mistakenly announced at a press conference that travel restrictions were being lifted immediately, creating chaos and anticipation.
  • Opening the Gates: At the Bornholmer Straße checkpoint, overwhelmed by massive crowds, guards gave in and opened the barriers around 11:30 PM, allowing people to cross into West Berlin without checks.
  • Celebration & Destruction: Thousands of East and West Berliners met at the wall for emotional reunions, dancing, and shouting "Tor auf!" (Open the gate!), with people starting to break down parts of the wall.
  • Impact: The fall of the wall led to the collapse of the East German government and the official reunification of Germany on October 3, 1990.

As we both say about Trump; he brags all the time, causes the press to attack him, though the press is totally wrong, and simply loves himself so much he adores talking for an hour or two to who will listen to him.
I am not like Dante and Winco who always take one side of this argument.

Could not have been too bad since Democrats allege Clinton fixed all of that.
The economy during Bill Clinton's presidency (1993–2001) experienced the longest economic expansion in U.S. history at the time, characterized by high growth, low unemployment, and a shift from large deficits to significant budget surpluses. Key successes included 22.7 million new jobs, low inflation, rising incomes, and the first balanced federal budget since 1969

Wrong again.

Me neither but I also am still a little bit on the fence of some of his decisions lately. Like this war is a good thing but I'm afraid that he's going to drag it out with the ceasefire still currently active.

I spent time in East Berlin when the Soviets commanded them. I have crossed the Check Point Charlie twice. Maybe you would love to live with guards all over armed with machine guns, with cleared from the wall a huge space, with guard towers, but Reagan challenged the Soviets like no other president and sure enough, the walls went town and the guards vanished.

Me and a woman who grew up in East Germany were going to get married and she and her family told me a lot. Naturally our press wouldn't defend Reagan.

Uncle Ronnie was great at violating laws.

Trump now says he did it to end the nuclear threat. However, a lot of Americans think it was already gone. Why Americans trusted Ayatollah puzzles me most.

The Soviet Union did not cease to exist while Reagan was president.

The problem for me isn't the fact that Trump promised no new wars since this isn't a new war it's an ongoing war and he's currently trying to finish it, but the problem for me is he said no more wars period. So that's why I'm hoping that it doesn't drag out and become a new and long war because that's where I'm going to start having a problem with it.

Not sure what that gets you.

Maybe you would love to live with guards all over armed with machine guns, with cleared from the wall a huge space, with guard towers,

I've had Russian and German friends who were there, and who unlike you -- actually lived there - not on some silly visits.

I know their anecdotal stories.

but Reagan challenged the Soviets like no other president and sure enough, the walls went town and the guards vanished.
The Wall did not go down because of anything Reagan said or did.

again...

Actually, "our press" bought into Reagan's Hyperbole and the myths.

The sickness of the mind people like you have reading the American media is straight out of "The Paranoid Style in American Politics" by Richard Hofstadter is a seminal 1964 essay and book examining how irrationality, suspicion, and conspiracy theories influence U.S. public life. It explores how fringe groups use heated rhetoric to derail mainstream politics, remaining relevant to modern analyses of political extremism and populism
