Some of you forgot Ronald Reaganl. Never knew of his wit and ways to explain politics. The achievements of this giant may never ever be exceeded. Trump needs to play this over and over and he could be loved. Reagan was loved by Americans. We elected him twice. He even could get the Soviets to laugh. When the program was supposedly not broadcasting yet, he said on the mike, in so many words that the Soviets never would rise because he just declared war on them and it was a joke.

Enjoy the real Ronald Reagan and please ChristisKing, if you never heard this or did earlier, let me know what you think of Reagan.

I remember him. Wasn't he the guy in Bedtime For Bonzo? :uhh:

Well, Ronny had a knack for speaking, much like Obumma, a performance art that I had hoped would rub off a little on Trump in the intervening years but it hasn't. If anything, Trump's public speaking has deteriorated over what it once was back in 2016, etc. Back then, Trump was sharper, wittier, but he has softened and blurred a lot in recent years. Trump has had the focus whipped out of him by years and years of weaponized lawfare used against him.

Reagan was loved by Americans.
Reagan understood diplomacy, engaging your enemy by disarming them with tact and humor--- a victimless action. Reagan was the Johnny Carson of politics. Trump is more like the David Letterman of politics, sooner or later, you just know that Trump will victimize someone with his humor, or at the very least, use it to direct flattery and praise for himself. Mind you, it is usually praise that would be lavished on him by an adoring media if he were a democrat, so I kinda let him skate a little bit.

But as to Reagan being loved, everyone loved him except the GOP, the GOP Party hated him and many in the GOP (much like Trump) fought his nomination, but Ronny was just too popular.

Reagan's stupid joke almost triggered a nuclear holocaust because one Russian command took it seriously and went on high alert.

I voted for Reagan twice, because I was 18 and didn't know any better.

Since then, I have to evaluate the damage he's done.

1) He made "Borrow and Spend" acceptable by cutting taxes on the rich. If you want someone to blame for our 30 trillion deficit, thank Reagan.

2) He gave the green light to union-busting that has demolished the middle class in this country.

3) He ramped up the policy of funding "Freedom Fighters" to annoy Soviet allied regimes, like the Mujahedin in Afghanistan (which later morphed into the Taliban and Al Qaeda) and the Contras in Nicaragua (which made big money by flooding our streets with crack cocaine).

4) He engaged in the kind of reckless deregulation that led to the 1990 S&L Crisis and eventually the 2008 crash.

But he was a damned sight better than Trump. The problem is, of course, that the policies he pursued would be blasphemy to the Orange Cult.

  • He gave amnesty to 3 million undocumented immigrants.
  • He appointed moderates to the Supreme Court
  • He supported the Brady Bill
  • He raised taxes when it was clear that Supply Side wasn't working (which is why Bush had to do his "Read my Lips" pledge that he broke.

So why is he well-regarded today by Republicans?

Because he's the only Republican in the last 50 years who wasn't voted out of office (Trump, Bush, Ford), put us into a recession at the end of the term (Trump, Bush-43, Bush-41, Ford, Nixon), or was impeached (Trump, Nixon).

My grandmother was in the prime of her life when he made movies and was just barely dabbling in politics and she thought he was an asshole. However I can't say that I entirely agreed with her. But I think she had some reasons as she was generally a good judge of character. Her knowledge of him sure went way before my time or most people's time these days.

Reagan reversed the Carter disaster. Today Trump is reversing the Biden disaster.

Nixon wasnt impeached he resigned.

Reagan defeated the USSR and reversed the Carter disaster. Trump is todays Reagan. Reversing the Biden disaster and destroying the regime in Iran. Democrats fought them both every step of the way

Okay, here's the problem with that.

First, Reagan had nothing to do with the fall of the USSR, and our leaders were completely caught off guard by its collapse. I remember in 1990, when they were still issuing us glossy guides to Soviet Weapons touting what a threat they were, when in fact, the whole thing was quietly falling apart.

Nothing to with Reagan at all. It had more to do with 200 million Non-Russians no longer wanting to be ruled by 150 million Russians, and the Russians themselves not really wanting to bother with an empire.

The fall of the USSR was simply the last colonial empire falling.

As for the "Carter Disaster", the cure was worse than the problem. Sure, inflation got under control eventually, but at the cost of destroying the middle class through union busting and driving down wages. It was like fixing a hangnail by amputating your arm.

Disagree.

The USSR had one thing going for it. The military. They could spend what they wanted. Western democracies were hemmed in by taxes, republican systems of government, public opinion, etc. Reagan showed that we were willing to match them bullet for bullet and then some. They were on shaky ground to start with but when domination of Europe was no longer a possibility…they went bye bye. It’s gonna happen again BTW.

Except the collapse of the USSR had nothing to do with that.

The USSR collapsed because the constituent republics, including Russia, decided they no longer wanted to be part of it.

Remember Yelstin standing on a tank? It happened when the hardliners tried to depose Gorbachev for being too liberal.

Reagan brought down the wall and used the arms race to bankrupt their economy. He increased Americas defense forcing the USSR to spend themselves into economic failure.

Reagan gave us 10 years of GDP growth after Carter wrece the economny with

After Carter cut defense to dangerous levels Regan rebuilt it forcing the USSR to bankrupt theur economy trying to keep up. He also brought down the wall.
HIs tax cuts TEFRA helped the middle class and created 10 years of GDP growth after Carter created stagflation and extreme inflation with high energy costs. Just like Biden did. Carter caused the Iran problem and the worst S&L bank failure in history. Not to be undone wrecking the present economy he passed the CRA Community Reinvestment act that caused the mortgage recession u der Bush. Carter was removed from office in landslide.

Trump much like Reagan is reversing the Biden disaster the same way the Carter disaster was reversed. Democrat policies wreck the economy conservative ones repair it.

Awesome. So he bankrupted our economy to bankrupt their economy. Brilliant!!!

That't not true, either. The Reagan Recession of 1981-82 didn't end until the end of 1982 (and we were still feeling the aftereffects until 1983, when unemployment peaked at 11.3%). The Next recession hit in 1990 under Bush. So we had maybe 7 years of limp growth

Nope. Germans brought down the wall, nothing to do with Reagan, who was back in CA pooping himself with Alzheimers at that point.

It did nothing of the sort. In fact, even Reagan realized that the tax cuts were a terrible idea, which is why he rolled them back in 1986.

But you are proving my original point, which was...

Because he's the only Republican in the last 50 years who wasn't voted out of office (Trump, Bush, Ford), put us into a recession at the end of the term (Trump, Bush-43, Bush-41, Ford, Nixon), or was impeached/resigned (Trump, Nixon).

Reagan brought down the wall and used the arms race to bankrupt their economy.
The Berlin wall and The USSR dissolved, under GHWB. All presidents since Ike played a role in that, not Just Raygun. The Raygun Administration was, until now, the most corrupt since Nixon.

He was a very funny and likeable speaker however. He was one of the last Republicans who actually believed in dialog, consensus, and compromise with the loyal opposition.

"best of all time" lol
Amnesty
Gave weapons to terrorists
Was aware of drug funneling which led to the crack epidemic
Weapon bans (he also supported the assault weapons ban in 94"
High spending
His whole admin was absolutely plauged by corruption.
A leftists wet dream. Maybe not for liberty loving Americans.

After Carter cut defense to dangerous levels
Congress made the defense cuts after we tucked tail and ran from Vietnam. Carter was handed an economy in disarray. Inflation was out of control. Nixon took us off the gold standard. They even tried to institute wage and price controls. The Vietnam Retreat. Watergate fall out. Carter wasn't able to fix all the problem he was handed until he appointed Volker. We didn't have a rapid deployment force to deal with rapidly evolving threats overseas. Carter was responisble for starting that effort as well. He was a politician ahead of his time. He ran on energy independence in 1976, but big oil had importing cheap oil from SA on it's mind instead.

South Vietnam fell because the democrats REFUSED to honor our treaty with them and cut support so much the South couldn't support their military.
