It's Cold Out

Yep, pipes froze in my condo. Happens every year it seems. Neg 7 here today I will go ice fishing tomorrow. If my water is not back on by Thursday I will go back to the city for a while or go visit my daughter and grandchildren. I had a group of four friends go ice fishing on Sunday. You would not believe the picture they sent me. The were snapping big time. I hope for a similar day tomorrow. I hope there is a fish cleaner open somewhere I intend to catch more than I want to clean. Ice fishing here has been extremely limited the past few years. Just not enough ice. Can't wait to go.

Our problem is that we have so many mountain subdivisions that are frozen wastelands when it gets like this. They don't get that their 500K+ home "away from it all" comes with strings attached.

Of course, the dumb-shit school board gave them two weeks off for Christmas this year. I guess they never heard tell of snow-days, or maybe just don't care.

Oh well, they could have school year-round if they wanted to what with all the schools having A/C now.

I'm sure the school board has to abide by the required number of school days. This is usually set by the state. So maybe the kids get two weeks off in December but start at the beginning of August. We get two weeks off too but we go well into June.

Yeah every single school district around here is closed. I don't get it frankly. The cut off used to be -20 wind chill and we're not near that this morning.

I have a feeling very litigious parents are behind much of this
They don't want kids outside waiting on school buses when it is -25 wind chill outside, they closed most of the rural schools near where I live because of the windchill today.

It could be worse......They are praying in LA.....Expecting 6-10" of snow.

I have never seen a weather graphic like this one. It probably won't stick on the ground for long but it will seriously shut things down for a few days.

Right of course. My point is it's not that cold here today. But the snow machine kicked up, so in the end not having school on a very cold day with roads slick is a good call.

They are much more likely to cancel school in Illinois over bitter cold than they do snow, at least in rural areas. In town they might not close due to snow but often do in rural areas, but bitter cold shuts down both.

Interesting. I picked a town in the middle of the state--Decatur--and looked up average annual snowfall. I came up with 12 inches. Here in my part of MI, we get 50 inches/year. I have family on the west side and they get 75. Way up north in the UP it's double even that.

Decatur is a shithole of a town, one of those hollowed out former manufacturing towns, where I live is not much better and same story. As kid growing up here we were used to blizzards here in the late 70's and early 80's, snowmobiling was very popular growing up, but now you can't ride them here and have not been able to for probably 20 years (or more), we rarely get enough snow to these days.

The cold doesn’t bother me so much, but I hate driving in the winter.

Some of the worst road conditions here in West Michigan that I’ve seen in years.

So cold the salt isn’t effective. And the powdery snow blowing in the wind creates whiteouts fast

US131 is littered with crashes

It's a condo. I don't have access to the pipes until they hit my unit. They were supposed to have taken steps. They being the association. To prevent this even hit me with an assessment for it. Well all in the association were hit with an assessment. Oh well. I am going to sell the damn thing in the spring. G I need acreage and a pole barn up here. My condo is nice because I can walk to the dock during jigging season. But that is only a month I move my boat east after that. I get a dock with my condo but only use it for a month. I can rent a dock instead. Acreage a pole barn maybe house or trailer makes more sense for me. I really need a space I can work on and store my boat for winter. I am out of here come spring.

I gotta hay my critters a tad more here.....~S~
When I had horses. I remember seeing steam come off them on a cold day while they were feeding.

Was minus 28 here this morning. With windshield minus 39. I for one cherish the cold. The older one gets the more they admire it. Those that head south should be kicked outta here gor good. Good riddens.

I drove all the way north in Western Michigan back in 2023 and the interstate was like brand new, those roads were great to drive on, and very beautiful scenery along the way to Mackinac.
