Billionaire Larry Ellison has cut 21,000 jobs at Oracle as bosses claimed AI was increasingly replacing human workers.

The software giant had around 141,000 employees at the end of April, down from around 162,000 at the same time last year, according to its latest annual report.

“The adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce,” bosses said.

In April, thousands of Oracle workers were told they were being sacked immediately and were locked out of their company IT systems, according to an email seen by The Telegraph. However, the full extent of the lay-offs was not disclosed.

The restructuring reflects both increased use of AI within the company and an effort to shore up staff costs as Oracle refocuses its spending on technology infrastructure. (data centers)

Looks like they did it....And are gonna do it again.

Well, maybe a lot of them were H1B workers.

Imagine being a tech worker right now, this is the importance of career diversification, you need another revenue stream that you can jump into if the one you're in dries up.

We need laws to protect the humans who are laid off through government support.

One, pass a Robotic Labor Replacement Law that creates a payment for each human laid off, a one-time fee.

Second, pass an ongoing, annual Robotic Labor Act that creates a support network for laid off, unemployable humans.

Companies have been battling the 80/20 rule for many decades. My view is that if you are part of the 20% that does 80% of the work, your job is safe and you will always be promoted rather than fired. If you are part of the 80% you are easily replaceable now and should rethink your priorities. If there is one phrase that will perfectly summarize the future of work, it is "Survival Of The Fittest."

And?

I have been following the development of AI for awhile now and its ramifications. If anyone wants a real brain teaser, try to figure out how Socialism will fare in a world supported by advanced AI. It is a fascinating exercise.

That is great in theory but replacing humans is about increasing wealth, so this option by bought off politicians likely is DOA. They don’t work for us, they work for lobbyists

If AI-driven productivity eliminates the need for most labor in knowledge-intensive sectors, governments may be forced to provide basic livelihoods through universal basic income or expanded public services, aligning with socialist redistributive goals......Business Today.

That's the prevailing hope of the left, that AI finally delivers socialism. They also thought automation and Information Technology would bring about Socialism. They just became tools to develop better efficiency and competitiveness. With AI, how can further increased efficiency and competitiveness exist in a socialist marketplace? Keep doing the exercise, then focus on geopolitics and global markets.

People have been laid off for years. Decades actually with little support. How about protection agnostic of industry?

Then vote in those who will work for the people.

My question is, what are the job opportunities for those 21,00 unemployed workers and others like them? Doesn't appear to be in manufacturing, jobs are being cut there too. I'm trying to understand how this AI thing is going to work for people who lost their jobs due to AI.

LOL....I guess they need to learn to build data centers. ;)

Hopefully this will ignite a revolution. People who lost their jobs to AI, will become enraged at billionaires to whom the profit generated by AI workforces goes, and then they will become enraged at the politicians, for failing to provide them with livelihoods when their jobs are taken. I predict there will be massive societal upheaval.

I wouldn't look to the government to solve this problem. The government works for the billionaires, not the people. The real job description of the government is to make billionaires richer and make sure the poor don't eat the billionaires. People are about to finally learn that the government is not their friend. My suggestion is start being more relevant and useful to the billionaires and try to become a billionaire yourself. If you think about it, this has always been the winning strategy throughout the centuries.

That is beyond foolish.

Say industry manages to get rid of 50% of all workers.

What happens? Unemployement is at 50% and nobody is buying anything. Industry just shot it's own balls off.

This is true. If we could just get the government control of the market drastically reduced, the market could solve this problem much better than the politicians could. Anyone who took a basic Microeconomics course understands this. But, the billionaires want the government to control the market so they can get richer. The real problem isn't AI, it's the government-billionaire collusion. Maybe one day AI can solve that problem for us. Until then we have to eat, and that means playing the game better than everyone else.

When you Walter Reuther, UAW President, was shown the latest robotic, mechanical machines in the auto making plant, he said, "Machines will not buy your cars."
