I do not believe that (in the open source anyway) there is any evidence to believe that Israel has (if any at all) only a few tactical warheads.

All the open source material is very old. The newest being something like a decade old, and a majority as old as information made available in the 1960's through the 1980's.

I don't think that the UNSCOM (United Nations Special Commission) and the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) are concerned at all. To hold and maintain Nuclear Weapons is an expensive proposition (very very expensive). Trying to maintain the illusion is must less so. This is true since Israel now has so many dual-use delivery systems (both nuclear and conventional). It is not about what you are convinced of, but more about what you don't see (which is evidentiary and tangible).

I agree that Israel's adversaries believing that Israel has nuclear weapons is a deterrent.

However, that's almost a non issue. Israel's conventional forces and the training readiness those forces maintain are more than a match for any regional aggressor. None of the neighboring Arab states have any need or reason to go to war with Israel. What's left are the islamic terrorist franchises such as Hamas, islamic gee-had and Hezbollah. Hezbollah is the real wildcard as they could potentially draw Lebanon into a shooting war if they attack Israel.

Ultimately, I see the real danger in the region coming from a "nukular" armed Iran. The Shia Mullocrats hoping to usher in the return of the Mahdi is the real danger.
