The president needs to be near expert enough to judge experts in every subject. They need to be able to "bone up" on any given subject, fairly quickly, but they should also have a broad and fairly deep knowledge of all potentially pertinent subjects, i.e. they should be a "policy wonk".

He needs to be cognizant enough to choose the best people within all those disciplines to advise him, and capable of extrapolating all information given him by them to reach a decisive conclusion.

History would be the single best teacher, yet understanding it requires good skills in other fields.

Act like an Adult . this one acts a fool, He acts like he our daddy, acts all big and bad. and the most important Know when to keep your stupid mouth shut

a president doesn't really need to be expert in anything. it would be nice if they tried to bring us all together instead of dividing us. as they surround themselves hopefully with experts who knows all things he needs to know about.

U.S. need tactical president when war is out. Then U.S. need Israel in middle east and Chile in south America and maybe NATO in Europe.

Use your posts to explain why you chose the answers you did in the poll.
I chose Economics and History. They are ALWAYS applicable. There are others, depending on the situation at hand. For instance, in the current geopolitical situation both Tactical and Stratigic Leadership (as it applies to foreign/military policy) would be nessicary. So, in short, it would depend on the "climate" at the time.
That said, a President does need to be well versed in all the "categories" listed and more. I am far more interested in their general philosophy and stance on general topics within the "categories" (as well as the expertise or those who advise them on the specifics) than on their own expertise on any given topic.

Appreciating his own limitations and those of others.

And being a good cheer leader.

The President of the United States needs to be a leader and have the ability to make decisions on a short notice.

I prefer a Commander in Chief who is politically wise, and able to handle foreign policy as error - less as possible. Someone whom has Americans at heart.

They don't need to be exactly genius material. They don't need to be Harvard Grads - or someone whom can do a calculus problem on a whim. That is why the President has advisors......both for civilian and Military affairs.

In my first book I wrote ( fiction ) , I described hypothetical failures in the Military community, and the azzzzz cheewings that followed by competent leaders. Military Commanders being relieved of command, and a break down in communication. Breakdown in communication is the many reasons ( and in some instances the foundation ) for failures.....some failures terrific and severe.

The President does not need to be "Presidential" all the time. Nothing wrong with playing on a basketball court, going to a football game, smiling and talking with reporters. But ultimately, directly or indirectly....the President is responsible for the White House. He is responsible for his house.

You can't micromanage, at times it is bad for morale. You can only screen and critique so much as a leader, and if you do it too often.....you are holding people by the hand. Some people don't like to be held by the hand, and it can become a frequent event - troublesome on the leader or supervisor.

History is behind us. We need to look ahead for the future. We need a President that can actually lead Americans, bring down the national debt, handle education and social security, get a grasp on foreign policy, work with Congress, and create good paying jobs......to better the economy and for the better of families. And we need industry here in the United States, not abroad ( Thank You Bill Clinton ). The President has a huge weight on his back.........so Pennsylvania Avenue is not easy, and the critics ( legitimate ones) are numerous and harsh.

There are no more Ronald Reagans in the world. ( sniffle - sniffle )

Politics. You have to know the game if you are going to play. This should be a given.

Sociology. An understanding of how people act when in a group is essential

Plain old leadership. The most important one but only after you have the first two under your belt. You have to know what to do with the knowledge and how to lead people. You can lead from the front or from the rear but you must lead them. If there is no leadership then you just have a bunch of people talking about what they are going to do....someday.

A President should have scholarly skills, meaning he or she must be able to independently research and analyse any subject and reach decisions after consultations with experts, but after his scholarly research be able to fully understand a topic as presented by advisors and consultants so as to judge the advice they are being given. Analytical skills, academic skills and the ability to objectively make conclusions on a topic before making a decision influenced by politics and emotions are paramount.

If a President had to do his own research and analysis of every issue, nothing would ever be decided. Do you think the CEO of General Motors needs to be an expert on wheel alignment?

I disagree. One of the most important rules of leading is delegation. Not only does this encourage others to participate and enable you to leave a legacy, it frees you from having to know everything about everything.

again, the president needs to be intelligent and informed.
