Bernis is way wrong. What working class did the Democrats miss?
What do you mean? The working poor in this country are desperate and they don't feel that either party is meeting their needs...and they are not wrong about that.
Biden and Obama did some good things for the working class, but it just isn't enough....for the reasons that I previously explained.
The day that the Democratic Party makes Medicare For All their #1 priority and makes raising the minimum wage to $20.00 per hour their #2 priority is the day that the Democratic Party never loses another election.
The Democratic Party has become too much of a party for the affluent and highly educated....like the Republican Party 20 - 30 years ago. Unfortunately for the Democrats, however, the vast majority of Americans are not affluent and not highly educated. Appealing primarily to these voters is not a smart strategy for winning elections nationwide.
Because the things Biden got done were pretty much for the working class. They saved pensions for labor unions. And it is apparent that most people here didn't listen to Harris speak while on the campaign because she proposed a whole bunch of things that would help the working class.
How many American workers belong to unions nowadays? Around 10% or 15%.
In the 1970s, the percentage of American workers who belonged to labor unions was
far higher than this.
And therein lies another problem....the Democrats have not done enough over the past 50 years to protect labor unions.
I completely agree that the Democratic Party has done far more for the poor and working class than the Republicans. It's not even close. But when people are financially desperate, they make poor voting decisions.
That is why it is always dangerous when a country has a huge disparity of wealth like the U.S. -- it can potentially lead to authoritarianism, which is what this country now faces under Trump.
And the Democratic Party just has not done enough to ease the financial desperation that millions of Americans feel.
