The U.S. and Iran effectively broke ties following the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the subsequent
Iran Hostage Crisis (1979–1981), during which 52 Americans were held for 444 days. This event, following the 1953 CIA-backed coup, transformed Iran from a close ally into an adversary, leading to broken diplomatic relations and lasting economic sanctions.
- 1953 Coup: The U.S. (and UK) orchestrated the removal of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh to protect oil interests, fueling anti-American sentiment.
- 1979 Revolution: Ayatollah Khomeini seized power, replacing the U.S.-backed Shah and declaring the U.S. the "Great Satan".
- 1980 Hostage Crisis: Washington officially severed diplomatic ties and imposed major sanctions after students seized the U.S. embassy.
- 1984 Terror Designation: The U.S. designated Iran a "state sponsor of terrorism," a status that remains in place.
- 1988 Airspace Incident: The US Navy shot down Iran Air Flight 655, killing 290 civilians, which worsened the perception of hostility.
Reagan made things worse. He did not fix the problem.
- The 1980s Iran-Iraq War: The U.S. tacitly supported Iraq during its eight-year war with Iran, even when Iraq used chemical weapons.
- Axis of Evil" (2002): Despite Iran offering secret assistance to the U.S. after 9/11, President George W. Bush labeled Iran part of an "Axis of Evil", deeply wounding chances for reconciliation.
- Nuclear Deal Withdrawal (2018): After a brief period of cooperation under the 2015 Nuclear Deal (JCPOA), the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew and reimposed "maximum pressure" sanctions.
