That doesn't mean that as a separate nation from the North, the South might not have been able to develop enough industry to be successful.

I moved to Florida in the 1960s and the county I moved from was highly industrial at the time. Today it is part of the Yankee Rust Belt.

Florida and Texas are both successful today and both operate without a state income tax. In fact people from the big blue cities such as New York are moving to Florida and Texas today. Florida even has a nice budget surplus. Florida and Texas are home to some high tech industries today such as the aerospace industry.

When I was in the service in the 1960s, I lived in Mississippi. It was a backward state then and may still be.

If we care about facts, the most accurate way to describe the cause of the Civil War would go something like this:

The seven Deep South states seceded mainly because they feared that Lincoln and the Republicans would use illegal, unconstitutional means to end slavery.

The four Upper South states did not join in the first wave of secession because they did not share the Deep South's concerns about the threat to slavery. Those four states only decided to secede when Lincoln made it clear that he was going to use force against the seven seceded states. They seceded because they believed it was unconstitutional to maintain the Union by force.

If slavery had not existed, there would have been no Civil War. The tariff was a major point of contention between the North and the South, but it paled in comparison to the contention over slavery. Some Southerners viewed the tariff as being more of an issue than slavery, but the majority of Southerners viewed slavery as the main issue.

The Deep South states were wrong for seceding without even giving Lincoln a chance to show how he would govern. The Deep South states were obligated by the Constitution to accept the election results.

If the founding fathers had come back to life in February 1861, they probably would have opposed the idea of using force to compel the seceded states to return to the Union. The historical record seems pretty clear that the Union was intended to be voluntary.

The Confederacy foolishly and tragically made a peaceful resolution impossible by firing the first shot by bombarding Fort Sumter.

Technically, the Civil War was fought over the right of secession and over the issue of whether or not the federal government had the right to use force to maintain the Union. However, the main underlying factor that brought those issues to a violent confrontation was slavery.

IOW, technically, the war was not fought "over slavery," but the war would not have occurred if slavery had not existed. Thus, broadly speaking, in the larger scheme of things, the war was fought over slavery.

But Lincoln could not have ended slavery, even if he wanted to. What was happening was new states were joining the union and Slave States would be a minority.

By Seceding, the south ended up ending slavery in four years rather than the twenty or more under normal conditions.
Slavery would have been phased out and slave owners would have been compensated.

The South seceded over the slavery issue, their state-rights argument holds no water. The war was because of Lincoln's belief in American imperialism. I doubt the South could have made it on its own and hold belief that it would have to eventually decide to join Mexico or more likely return to the good old the U.S.A.
