Haley positioning herself as ‘alternative candidate’ to embattled Trump or as ‘frontrunner for 2028’
Donald Trump trounced Nikki Haley on Saturday in the South Carolina primary, a victory that emphatically punctuated the depth and breadth of his support among Republican primary voters as he vanquished his lone remaining major opponent in her home state. Trump did not even have to mount a vigorous campaign, making few appearances and spending relatively little money. Haley has vowed to stay in the race and planned to visit Michigan, the site of the next primary, on Sunday. But the loss further eroded the rationale for her candidacy, barring something unforeseen that would derail the former president. Here are some takeaways from the South Carolina leg of the campaign: Haley talked up her chances in “my sweet state of South Carolina” for months. Twice elected governor, initially as a tea party candidate in 2010, she was universally known in her state, and mostly for positive reasons. She had even served as Trump's ambassador to the United Nations. Her conservative record was clear. And yet her credentials were no match for Trump's hold on the party. Trump has now won with ease in the Midwest, the Northeast and the South, bulldozing any regional differences that had existed in the party before his rise. Haley talked in 2024 about her successes recruiting industry to South Carolina and signing tax cuts and voter ID laws. She promoted her international experience. She excoriated Trump as too risky, too old, too busy fending off indictments, too close to Vladimir Putin and not close enough to NATO allies. Voters were not swayed. As Trump coasts to another victory, and Haley vows to fight on, FRANCE 24 is joined by David Darmofal, Professor and Department Vice Chair in the Department of Political Science at the University of South Carolina.

i'm impressed by her, and think she would make an excellent candidate for 2028..
how about you all?

I can't see where a sore loser like Gov Haley stands the chance of a snowball-in-you-know-where in 2028 as a Republican.

There are one of two possibilities in November 2024- Trump or Biden.

If Biden wins, she and similar nevertrumpers will be blamed for the defeat. If Trump wins, someone from the triumphant 2nd Trump Adminstration will be front runner.

As one commentator observed last evening, 40 percent support is not a small group.

She can not only run again in 2028, she is the odds on favorite to win if she runs. She's the only candidate who hasn't damaged her future chances. Right now, she's seen as standing up to the big bully in her party. Which her opponent can't stand. :)
MAGA will be gone by 2028 as will Trump and most of those who supported him.

If she ever runs again as a Republican, you guys are sure to win. We promise. She is slow death. A quicker pone is preferred.

Maybe if those who want to make America Great Again become disinterested in politics, she might be able to get the Republican nomination.

But as far as the general election, no chance. She still needs to win those people's votes, and if Sleepy Joe wins, they will rightfully blame her for the catastrophe.

BTW, if Biden does a tremendous job,why would the electorate elect the other party under any circumstance?

The "alternative" is exactly the kind of neocon hack that made Trump look like a good deal.....You being impressed by Bush with tits is possibly the biggest laugh of the day.

that's needlessly insultive.
and i'm far from the only fan of a 'peace thru strength' set of tactics and strategies!

Yeah, this has been weird since Day One, especially when she just changed one day and really started going after him.

It's still possible, on the off chance that Trump's found guilty of a felony, that DeSantis and/or Vivek would jump back in. The rubes like them more because aggressive nastiness is such a high priority for them. They might confuse Haley's normal, adult decency with terrible weakness and capitulation.

I don't know if this orange fever will break by 2028, but she definitely hopes so.

The love that Romney and McCain get is only because they were such pathetic candidates.
Right up until they became the Republican candidate. The lovefest stopped immediately, and they were treated just like any other Republican. RINOs are so pathetically delusional.
