Reread my thread. Whatever "economic misery" that the plan I put forward in my thread would be absolutely nothing to what has happened in the past 9+ months. And what will follow. From what I hear, Europe is now dealing with a second wave. We need to have done with all that bullshit. Stop the virus. That is all. Just do whatever is necessary to put an end to it. And having prepared to do so, it won't be all that bad. After Biden gets elected, there will probably be another round of stimulus checks. Over a two month period, there would be no problem with spending that money to buy the supplies needed to last for three weeks. It would be a hell of a lot better than getting the money and still having the coronavirus around afterwards.

China has just opened their borders to all countries except no tourist. Major cities are filled with traffic and businesses are open. However there are still parts of the country that are closed. China practices mass quarantines, that is they seal off whole cities, villages, and neighborhoods until the virus is gone. It's largely up to people to follow the preventive measure. It's pretty draconian but it seems to work.

But China is use to draconian measures! We are the United States and that would not fly here. Try that here and you would start a rebellion. You cannot mandate people stay at home and not provide for their families. Not everyone can live on $1200 a month. I think any mayor or governor that proposes such a lock down would become an enemy to the people

We don't need such draconian method but we do need rules and we do need to enforce them. Not Wearing masks where required, breaking quarantine, large gatherings can't be allowed. We have to think of it as a war and in a war, personal freedoms have to be curtailed. A lot can be accomplished by uniting government, federal, state, and local in regard to the virus, public service messages, ads, meeting with state and local leaders and businesses to encourage following the rules. Getting cooperation from the public is the most important factor in stopping an epidemic. When the vaccine becomes available we're going to have require people be inoculated. Currently 50% is not willing to vaccinate. That has to change. If we're going to rid ourselves of this epidemic we nee 70% participation and we probably going need two does. To get that level of participation we going to have require just about everyone that can take the vaccine do so.

I agree but there is middle ground. For example when the vaccine becomes available, it should be required to attend school just as we did with smallpox years ago. State and local governments can require all employees to be vaccinated, the same goes for any one dealing with public in retail establishments. For people that can't take the vaccine, medical exemptions would be allowed. One of few pluses in prevention of transmission of diseases is every single person does have to comply but a large majority must.

I think you're missing something, most of the transmission of virus is coming from Americans, not foreigners entering the US. Tourism into the US is down by over 85%. The only way we can reduce the increasing number of cases and deaths is a massive effort on the part of the federal, state, and local government to increase our efforts to stop the transmission of virus. That should be top priority of both the current and new administration. With or without a vaccine, we going to looking at 400,000 to 500,000 deaths by next year this time unless there are significant changes in preventing the transmission.

Locking down the country will certainly reduce the number cases but unless there is a change in behavior of the country, transmission will shoot back up when the lock down is released. Even when shutdown the country, the virus will continue to spread among family members and close friends because there is a large number asymptomatic people.

IMHO, the right approach is to convince the public to take prevention more seriously. That might require some coercion but that will not eradicate the virus. That ship sailed over 6 months ago but we certainly reduce the number of cases, illness, and deaths. The idea is to save as many lives as possible until we reach herd immunity by means of the vaccine which will probably be 1 to 2 years.

You quoted on my thread. But apparently you didn't read it. It doesn't matter who transmits what. Or where vacationers go. If the plans I put forward were acted on, there would be no more coronavirus. After going for 9+ months of rising death tolls, shutdowns and mask wearing, three weeks of a real shutdown would be a walk in the park. Also, as I was telling somebody else, after the mass murderer Trump loses the election, there is likely to be another round of stimulus checks. Over a couple months, (possibly shorter) people would be able to buy everything they need to last three weeks of a REAL quarantine. Then afterwards, there would be no more coronavirus. However, it should have been a lot lower than that because according to John Hopkins, the US was the best prepared nation in the world to deal with the virus. Of course they didn't consider the Trump factor.

The reason why the US has failed so badly compared to the rest of world falls squarely on the national leadership. Countries that have been so successful, took the virus very seriously. Almost the same day in late February, that Donald Trump was mocking the doomsday crowd and declaring the virus was just Flu, South Korea's President Moon Jai-in was was telling his people that coronavirus was the greatest threat to the country since the Korean War. He told his people to expect random testing/contact tracing/quarantining in every city and town, closing and quartering any school or business with the virus. By March 1st their military was called up. They began testing in all transportation center, in every city and town and temperature checks on almost every street corner through out the country. Business and schools were required to temperature check every person that entered. Today, South Korea with a population of over 60 million has had a total of 443 deaths. If they aren't letting in tourists, I can't really call that open. On a different note, strange thing is we probably still have open borders with Mexico. I think you're missing something, most of the transmission of virus is coming from Americans, not foreigners entering the US. Tourism into the US is down by over 85%. The only way we can reduce the increasing number of cases and deaths is a massive effort on the part of the federal, state, and local government to increase our efforts to stop the transmission of virus. That should be top priority of both the current and new administration. With or without a vaccine, we going to looking at 400,000 to 500,000 deaths by next year this time unless there are significant changes in preventing the transmission.

Locking down the country will certainly reduce the number cases but unless there is a change in behavior of the country, transmission will shoot back up when the lock down is released. Even when shutdown the country, the virus will continue to spread among family members and close friends because there is a large number asymptomatic people.

That is if you don't like seeing people die and would like the coronavirus to go away. This approach would also have the added benefit of ridding us of the flu, common cold and who knows how many other contagious diseases. For this idea to work we would have to get the other nations on board. Tell people that they have two months from whatever date to prepare for another lock down. A REAL one this time. Like a REAL quarantine. The next lock down would last for three weeks. In two months time there should be no problem in getting enough supplies to last for three weeks. It wouldn't or shouldn't empty out store shelves like happens in places where people find out a hurricane will soon be arriving. And stores would be able to prepare too. Not having food rotting on their shelves. Some crops may rot in the fields. But some things can't be avoided.

Then when the time arrives for the next lock down, shut down EVERYTHING! Except for places like hospitals or electric generating plants. Also, stop ALL travel between cities. Except for people who work at the places I mentioned or other necessary personnel. Sure. It would suck. But after three weeks, you could kiss having to wear a mask good by. You could kiss the idea of getting a flu or coronavirus vaccine good by. And restaurants could pack in customers like sardines. And any economic woes after that could no longer be blamed on the coronavirus. But if you don't want any of this to happen, just vote for Trump. We will then see how many more hundreds of thousands will die.

I think you're missing something, most of the transmission of virus is coming from Americans, not foreigners entering the US. Tourism into the US is down by over 85%. The only way we can reduce the increasing number of cases and deaths is a massive effort on the part of the federal, state, and local government to increase our efforts to stop the transmission of virus. That should be top priority of both the current and new administration. With or without a vaccine, we going to looking at 400,000 to 500,000 deaths by next year this time unless there are significant changes in preventing the transmission.

Locking down the country will certainly reduce the number cases but unless there is a change in behavior of the country, transmission will shoot back up when the lock down is released. Even when shutdown the country, the virus will continue to spread among family members and close friends because there is a large number asymptomatic people.

IMHO, the right approach is to convince the public to take prevention more seriously. That might require some coercion but that will not eradicate the virus. That ship sailed over 6 months ago but we certainly reduce the number of cases, illness, and deaths. The idea is to save as many lives as possible until we reach herd immunity by means of the vaccine which will probably be 1 to 2 years.

You're almost as cavalier about Covid deaths as Trump. There have been almost twice as many US deaths due to Covid-19 than all the US combat deaths in every US military engagement since WWII. Covid-19 is like 9/11 everyday for 72 todays. And what does our fearless leader have to say about it. "It is what it is".

The real problem is that so many of these deaths were unnecessary. The US has 20% of the Covid-19 deaths in the world and only 4% of the population; that is we have 5 times as many deaths relative to our population. Assuming America's ability to fight the virus was no better than the rest of the world, our number of deaths should be 1/5 or about 42,000. However, it should have been a lot lower than that because according to John Hopkins, the US was the best prepared nation in the world to deal with the virus. Of course they didn't consider the Trump factor.

The reason why the US has failed so badly compared to the rest of world falls squarely on the national leadership. Countries that have been so successful, took the virus very seriously. Almost the same day in late February, that Donald Trump was mocking the doomsday crowd and declaring the virus was just Flu, South Korea's President Moon Jai-in was was telling his people that coronavirus was the greatest threat to the country since the Korean War. He told his people to expect random testing/contact tracing/quarantining in every city and town, closing and quartering any school or business with the virus. By March 1st their military was called up. They began testing in all transportation center, in every city and town and temperature checks on almost every street corner through out the country. Business and schools were required to temperature check every person that entered. Today, South Korea with a population of over 60 million has had a total of 443 deaths. There unemployment is half of the US unemployment rate and almost every business and school is operating normally. There are many examples of other countries that took the virus seriously and followed a prevention plan and there were many such as US, Brazil, and a number in Europe that did not. The deaths and number of cases tell the story of success and failure.

The other two lines list the condition that lead up to the underlying cause. The CDC considers the death a covid-19 death if Covid is listed as the immediate cause or the underlying cause.

Most of the covid death cases are very straightforward. The lungs are usually so severely involved with the pathology, they are two to three times or more the normal weight of a normal lung. A CT Scan of the lungs shows this very clearly. For a person with covid who dies from other causes, this is not the case. In rare cases, the chain of medial events and the condition of lungs are not sufficient for the doctor to make the call so it is referred to the medical examiner.

Both undercounts and overcounts of COVID-19 deaths are possible, but it's not clear which is more likely, or whether they might simply balance each other out. However, one thing is definite, the cases in question would be a rather small percent of the total covid-19 deaths in the US.

COVID-19 deaths ARE being over counted, by A LOT, but not primarily for political reasons. The reason is, as it is for almost ALL things, because of the all mighty dollar. As part of the CARES Act, Medicare pays 20% ADDITIONAL for a COVID related patient than a standard reimbursements. This carries over to ALL insurance reimbursements because most payment schedules are derived off of Medicare schedules. We need to do better here.

Schools were shutdown for a month but businesses were never ordered to close. A lot of business dropped off so much that many closed or cut hours. Mask wearing in public was near universal and social distancing was practiced. In short, they did what the US CDC said should be done with little if any opposition. As one Japanese man said, "It would be unthinkable for anyone associated with the government or any news outlet to suggest that people not follow the rules. In Japan, with a population of about 125 million people they have had 1630 total deaths do to covid-19 compared to the US total of 217,000.
