I have often stated that when I got a job at Kroger's as a carryout/stockboy I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I went from 75 cents/hr. jobs to $1/hr. and the checkout girls, wow, as well as guys my own age who became friends. I was a junior in HS, this was 1957.
I didn't think about it until much later but everyone that worked in that store was good looking, the girls and the guys, almost like out of Hollywood's 'central casting'. I remember putting in my application, encouraged by a friend who had started working there a few weeks before. I placed the filled-out form in a basket that contained dozens of other applications. Seeing those I wasn't very confident that I would be hired. Two weeks later I got a call from the store manager to start work. I couldn't believe my luck.
I stayed in the retail food business for many years, becoming a meat cutter, and working for several companies and many different stores. The story was the same. The people that worked in those stores were all good-looking people. Of course this was no accident. Grocery store employees, as well as salesclerks in most retail stores interact with customers all the time. It is to the retailer's advantage to hire the best-looking people that they can. Of course, this means discriminating against applicants that don't measure up appearance wise.
