I've done both- kept it and returned it.
Most of the times I have found money, there was no way to figure out who lost it. Years ago, I did find a wallet with almost a thousand bucks in it. James and I were poor and we drooled. She was a sweet lil ole lady that tried to give us an award.To me it matters how much it is and if it can be returned.
.My inner voice would hound me if I kept it, for any reason or excuse. There is no way I could rationalize keeping it. Even if I just turned it into a manager and they kept it, there would be no guilt I would take to bed with me that night. I would do the very same as OhPleaseJustQuit would do. "I do my best to return it. If I can't return it, I give it to the local food bank, or some such thing."
