How did the U.S. arrive at its tariff figures?

Are lefties unfamiliar with the process after four years of Biden Fascism? Here's how it works, the people demand a change and the candidate makes promises. In this case Trump is only following the wishes of the American majority to level the foreign trade playing field.

The tariff equation looks something like trade deficits squared, divided by some horseshit somebody in the admin pulled out of his ass, equals unfounded retribution.

Economists take issue with Trump’s tariff formula, arguing rate is inflated

The formula at the core of President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement that continues to rattle markets is bewildering economists, who say it is based on flawed assumptions.

Economists argue that Trump’s formula relies on a flawed, underestimation of a key metric, resulting in inflated tariff rates for countries.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the formula underpinning Trump’s sweeping “reciprocal” tariff plan is the country’s trade deficit with the U.S., divided by its exports, then divided by two. Trump also implemented a 10% baseline tariff on almost every country.

Basing an idiotic policy on an idiotic formula is what happens when an idiot, voted in to office by misinformed fools, surrounds himself with imbeciles who are too afraid to tell the idiot he's an idiot.

I remember the teachers in my math and physics classes in high school always asked us to show our work. So they could be sure we were using the right kinds of calculations to come to our conclusions.

Does anyone outside of the WH really believe Vietnam charges a 90% tariff for goods imported from the US? Curious market participants want to know where the number came from.

Markets have turned their sights on how U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration arrived at the figures behind the sweeping tariffs on U.S. imports declared Wednesday, which sent global financial markets tumbling and sparked concerns worldwide.
Trump and the White House shared a series of charts on social media detailing the tariff rates they say other countries impose on the U.S. Those purported rates include the countries’ “Currency Manipulation and Trade Barriers.”

An adjacent column shows the new U.S. tariff rates on each country, as well as the European Union.

I understand the curiosity. I don't understand why some folks think understanding the regime's methodology matters. It certainly doesn't matter to trump.

The White House Wednesday listed tariff rates for different countries. It didn’t take long for market observers to try and reverse engineer the formula.

Here's the formula. We are being governed by an ignorant, angry man who likely told his staff to find a rationale for putting disastrously onerous tariffs on basically every country in the world. So they did.

Similarly, he asked his staff to go after people on his enemies list. So they did. He asked his staff to deport immigrants to an El Salvadorian prison without regard for due process. So they did. He asked his staff to indiscriminately fire government employees regardless of whether they were performing essential duties. So they did. He asked his staff to break the law in pursuit of absolute power over the government. So they did.

Observing that trump is unfit to be the prez is so quaint as to be woefully inadequate to describe the magnitude of his unfitness. He is a human wrecking ball smashing in to democratic norms, the law, civil society, the Constitution, and the economy.

We need to take a moment to consider what has been described as the biggest economic policy mistake in 95 years is based on faulty reasoning.

There is no other prez in US history who enacted an economic policy widely accepted to be disastrous in its concept and justified it by having his staff come up with a rationale that is flawed to the point of incoherence.

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930

no explanation needed.

Well, no explanation to those who know the history of these kinds of onerous tariffs. In fact, the Smoot-Hawley tariff rates were actually lower than Dotard's.

Unfortunately, we have a prez with zero intellectual curiosity, who does not read, and sees the world thru a lens of hate, fabricated retribution, and ignorance.

You would "think" that Trump would have "thought" about these tariffs and how to formulate them.

Its the worst stock performance since THE LAST TIME TRUMP WAS PRESIDENT.
Which was preceded by the Great Recession caused by another Repub prez.

What would be your tariff figures? Please share.

What would be your tariff figures? Please share.
I'm not an expert on tariff policy. Apparently, neither is anyone in the regime. But as a starting point I would use a rationale based on fact, not fiction. And I would present the rationale to the American in a consistent, coherent way. Not haphazardly use a variety of rationales creating confusion.

I would order a rigorous examination of each country's trade practices, then present my conclusions to each country followed by opening negotiations on any alterations that needed to be made. My guess is the leadership of each country to be receptive to such an approach rather than having a metaphorical gun put to their heads based on a pile of horseshit.

Tarrifs are just one method foreign countries exploit trade. Trump at least once laid out other more hidden methods.

If you were to quit posting and look it up? I won’t do your legwork as you wont read it. All leftst marxist puke are lowIQ frankly. Not worth the effort to try and save. Your little minds were closed long ago.

This new table is a starting point for them to come to the negotiating table. Canada & Vietnam came in. Make your shoes here Nike. Go to Memphis TN. Put the unemployed blacks to work.

TAKING BACK OUR ECONOMIC SOVEREIGNTY: President Trump refuses to let the United States be taken advantage of and believes that tariffs are necessary to ensure fair trade, protect American workers, and reduce the trade deficit—this is an emergency.

  • He is the first President in modern history to stand strong for hardworking Americans by asking other countries to follow the golden rule on trade: Treat us like we treat you.
  • Pernicious economic policies and practices of our trading partners undermine our ability to produce essential goods for the public and the military, threatening national security.
  • U.S. companies, according to internal estimates, pay over $200 billion per year in value-added taxes (VAT) to foreign governments—a “double-whammy” on U.S. companies who pay the tax at the European border, while European companies don’t pay tax to the United States on the income from their exports to the U.S.
  • The annual cost to the U.S. economy of counterfeit goods, pirated software, and theft of trade secrets is between $225 billion and $600 billion. Counterfeit products not only pose a significant risk to U.S. competitiveness, but also threaten the security, health, and safety of Americans, with the global trade in counterfeit pharmaceuticals estimated at $4.4 billion and linked to the distribution of deadly fentanyl-laced drugs.
    • This imbalance has fueled a large and persistent trade deficit in both industrial and agricultural goods, led to offshoring of our manufacturing base, empowered non-market economies like China, and hurt America’s middle class and small towns.
    • President Biden squandered the agricultural trade surplus inherited from President Trump’s first term, turning it into a projected all-time high deficit of $49 billion.
  • The current global trading order allows those using unfair trade practices to get ahead, while those playing by the rules get left behind.
  • In 2024, our trade deficit in goods exceeded $1.2 trillion—an unsustainable crisis ignored by prior leadership.
  • “Made in America” is not just a tagline—it’s an economic and national security priority of this Administration. The President’s reciprocal trade agenda means better-paying American jobs making beautiful American-made cars, appliances, and other goods.
  • These tariffs seek to address the injustices of global trade, re-shore manufacturing, and drive economic growth for the American people.
  • Reciprocal trade is America First trade because it increases our competitive edge, protects our sovereignty, and strengthens our national and economic security.
  • These tariffs adjust for the unfairness of ongoing international trade practices, balance our chronic goods trade deficit, provide an incentive for re-shoring production to the United States, and provide our foreign trading partners with an opportunity to rebalance their trade relationships with the United States.

And a lot more: Fact Sheet: President Donald J. Trump Declares National Emergency to Increase our Competitive Edge, Protect our Sovereignty, and Strengthen our National and Economic Security

And oddly no one new tariffs on Russia, Cuba, North Korea, or Belarus

What? They don’t export enough to make it worth a tariff?

Then why did Trump put tariffs on two uninhabited islands?

Trump put tariffs on the uninhibited islands because he hates penguins! Sure..they wear tuxedos all the time, but they ain't rich..theyre just pretending!

Trump has done exactly that, so why are you butthurt?
