You can't conclusively know that. There has been a lot of CYA since that event and that still puts the black eye on the cops, not the gun. My brother is a LEO. He would never even consider putting his own life above a school full of children, regardless of what gun the shooter had.

I have an AR-15 and the 9mm handguns I own as well as the 357 revolver I own are no less deadly. I can as easily kill someone with those than I can with the AR. The AR is just scarier looking and there are many guns out there far more deadly than the AR that don't fall under the usual categorization of "assault" weapons because they don't necessarily look as scary or carry the stigma of the AR.

It's ironic that the people complaining about the police gunning down unarmed black men simultaneously only want the police to be ones with the guns.
